It's not grammatically wrong to use the "they" with a singular meaning. It's often found in official documents. No need to jump on assumption about gender and Tumblr, really. It's also a good way to prevent yourself from repeating "he" or "she" all the time.

It's appropriate to use when you don't know somebody's gender until they tell you so. Also, "they" is not feminist newspeak either.

I'm not jumping to any conclusions, it's pretty obvious why they're using it. And perhaps more people are using it in recent times, but it's far from universal, and it still sounds completely foreign it me, especially when used in such a way for a known individual. If you don't know a person's sex, "he" is appropriate.

Bird, mate, it's completely grammatically correct to use "they" when referring to someone, and there's plenty of evidence to back that up from history.

HOWEVER, the reason you're being a mongrel is because you attacked Rasp for the wrong thing. While "they" is completely fine in use here, why the fuck would you do so? You can easily say "he" as the chances are VERY high Ultra is a guy, simply from how Internet works. If it turns out that he's indeed a she, you politely apologise and we all go our merry way.

To be fair, you can skip this pointless aspect by just using gender-neutral when referring to unknown people.

Regardless, it's not a big deal, B1rd is just convinced that he needs to continue fighting a war against the feminist agenda that exists in his head.
Yeah, that would be valid if you couldn't assume his gender. In this case, it's NOT a 50-50 whether he's a guy or a girl, so it's completely fine to say "he" instead of "they".

Why on earth would I be referring to UltraHenzie, when he wasn't even the one using singular they? I was referring to all the people who use singular they. Take you own advice and don't try to nitpick grammar when you're not even right.
I... guess? I don't see the ratio as important, and generally just use gender-neutral unless I have a reason to (i.e. if I know the gender of the speaker). Works fine for all my communication, so having needless potential confusion (regardless of how likely it is that there'll be a mix-up) seems silly and pointless to me.

My mistake- you were referring to Raspberriel, as shown by the conversation. (Didn't go back to check who you were originally picking a fight with).

If you weren't referring to Raspberriel, then I can instead commend you on your inability to clearly communicate in conversation. You're a native speaker and yet you make silly mistakes like that while attempting to correct others' grammar, which is quite frankly sad.

Singular they is still perfectly valid, by the way. You had no grounds with this to start with, and you needlessly start arguments based on politics that nobody else is interested in.
I already told you who I was referring to. And just because I took it on myself to point out something, you have to go on a crusade to try to nitpick my sentences apart. Frankly, you're annoying. Buzz away.

Yeah, just like B1rd I was already feeling a bit annoyed when I wanted to let off some steam and make a joke-y post here. I really shouldn't have reacted the way I did, and I'm glad I was able to keep myself from posting more.

It would help if I, and a few others here, weren't so cynical about each other's intentions. That's the mentality that's been keeping me on edge for months now, and it's not a pleasant experience at all. (And yes, I've said something like this before.)

The important part is that I think you can easily turn it around.

You have to begin thinking for yourself and forming your own opinions, rather than them being fed to you as they are. Once you have that in the bag, I think you're going to be just fine as a person.

The same thing can't be said about some other people here.

Step 1:
Realize that none of your feelings, thoughts or actions have an effect on the world as a whole. Teens are way too caught up with ideology. Cue Mahogany. Once you realize that you're not the center of everything, you also stop getting worked up so much. Just remind yourself that shit doesn't matter as much as you think it does.

Step 2:
Avoid turning into a cynical bastard. Yeah, it certainly doesn't matter to the world whether you're alive or not, but that doesn't mean that you can't care about your own life. If you're cynical about it means that you still care way too much. Just do you and be happy that you have a chance to make your life something fun and fulfilling.

Thank god you're not the person receiving calls on suicide lines, cus that would be homocide

I don't think being cynical is that bad.

That being said, I don't think it's as black and white as you make it out to be. Your private life very much ties in with the outside world. Being an edgy shut-in won't help you understand shit and thus won't advance your character as a whole.
To become wiser and better as a person, you absolutely NEED to interact with the outside world and place your ideas out there.
Being an edgy shut-in is the complete opposite of what "taking care of your private life" looks like. Taking care of your private life includes but isn't limited to:
- getting educated
- having a stable job
- having an intimate, healthy relationship
- filling your free time with social activities and other stuff that you enjoy

Maybe "private life" was the wrong term here. I meant taking care of your own issues instead of trying to save the world.

I was talking about people that are deeply cynical, to a degree where it affects their ability to function. People that would feel very hopeles without their cynicism.

Yeah, it was a misunderstanding, then. Any kind of thing driven too far is an illness, including being cynical. Why did you mention that specific thing in the first place?

Define "saving the world"? I still stand by the statement that a person without a proper connection to the world is not a wiser person for being so.

One must focus on oneself as much as they need to focus on making sure the world around them is in order. We are all tied in one way or another, so having the goal of inward perfection is impossible without the "help" of others. Your character is built by your experiences of this world and the actions you have taken to change it.
railey if you really think trying to get people to be better people is too idealistic then you're the one who is cynical here
I'm going to make some examples to illustrate my points instead of talking about it in solely general .

The maxim is: If it doesn't affect you, or if you can't affect it, do not get involved.
You can extend that to others if you're feeling particularly altruistic, but the principle stays the same. (if it doesn't affect others..)

Hateful person online
- Does some hateful guy online immediately affect you? Only if you let him.
- Can you immediately and meaningfully affect him (aka: Could you change his mind?). If you're Mahogany: Clearly no.

Therefore: Hands off, go and do something more meaningful.

Politics
- Do Politics affect you? Yes.
- Can you immediately and meaningfully affect politics? You can vote, but your vote's worth is equal to the likelihood of your vote changing the outcome of the election, which is pretty much 0.

Voting also comes at almost 0 cost, so you might do it anyway, but you might also not do it and that'd be fine. 0-cost 0-impact actions don't really matter.
It follows that reading about politics would be equally useless unless you do it for a different reason than just being able to vote "better". Or arguing about it online and getting very emotional in the process. However: These two come at a cost, so...

Don't bother unless you plan a career in politics, or if you try to become a public figure to have a greater impact etc.

That should clear things up. It's also very basic common sense. Basically: Your ideals are useless if they fail to make an impact, Mahogany. And I'm pretty sure that nothing you ever did ever had an impact on B1rd, so why do you try so hard. You wasted like 500 hours getting mad at B1rd, insulting him and trying to change his mind. Get out and do something more useful.
Your own life is where things actually impact you and where you can actually make an impact. That's what you should turn most of your attention towards. Not politics, not the news, and especially not some people that give you a hard time online.

Railey2 wrote: 6a2u27

I have never tried to impact b1rd - only point out how stupid his shit is so nobody else gets tricked into believing his bullshit. Some people are beyond help but he's still writing stupid shit that other people will read.

Railey2 wrote: 6a2u27

Shit spreads if you let it, so yes, it does have an impact. I'm not going to literally sit here and let people be hateful if I can provide a counter point so that targeted people don't feel as marginalized.

Not to mention, the internet has a lot of influence in a lot of people's lives.
