Why this isn't in the Taiko subforum? I would have never seen it if I didn't check the Development forum because of boredom.
It made sense for it to be in development initially, but now it's ready I should post there! Should I move the thread or just post a link to it in the taiko forum?

OnosakiHito wrote: 1h4bn

I can expect this to work even my outdate tatacon, right? As in, this works for the old and new versions of TNT's tatacons?
If Taiko no Tatsujin can see it, it should work with my converter! :D
Might be best to have a post linking here in the Taiko forum. The correct section is here however it would be of interest to many taiko players.
I don't have a Tatacon but seeing that this is a thing, assuming it works as well as you described I'd love to try using one!

When will orders be open? :^)

As soon as I receive working boards! China is the only way to make it affordable, but they're not fast ;)
I will absolutely buy one as soon as you open some orders! Can't wait!

If so, take all my money

Bad news everyone - my supplier is having some unexpected delays sourcing some parts for the boards. Updated estimate is now late February.

If I'm lucky and they manage to send the boards before Chinese New Year, I will get them mid February. Will keep you updated as this progresses.
no problem pal, as long as you keep us informed, it's all good ;)
Great, now I need to buy Tatacon
Thanks so much for all of your effort!!!
How long will you sell these? Should I buy one now because it will be my only chance? Cause I won't be able to afford a Tatacon for quite a while.

I will sell these for as long as possible! If I disappear/get abducted by aliens/die, anyone with enough funds can make batches themselves from the files on GitHub :)

There will be supply delays early on as I work out what the demand is like, but these should be alleviated by the second or third batch :)
hey its me again i was just wondering if you got them in again. its been a while since i have talked to you so i just wanted to check up on their status

Still waiting on them to ship. Chinese New Year slowed things down somewhat, combined with the extended delay in sourcing parts.

Dang, they havent even shipped yet? so many delays
Ahh this is the converter of my dreams. 100% Confirmed for one once they get in! :D :D
Topic Starter
Great news! They've finally shipped to me! Expect them to be here in 2 weeks :)
Yussssssssss finally
Cant wait for them
Topic Starter
Still waiting for the parcel, but while I wait, I got hard numbers on latency.

Using my scope, I had 1 probe connected to a piezo mic, and another to the LED of the converter. This LED updates at 1KHz, the same rate as the USB update rate.

I then smacked the drum 50 times, and recorded the delay between the moment the piezo started to respond, and when the converter ed a hit. An example measurement:

After 50 hits, here are the results:
Average: 1.802ms
Median: 1.77ms
Std Deviation: 0.44454517
Min: 1.1ms
Max: 2.78ms

Rounding the max value up, I can confidently say that there is an absolute worst case 3ms lag. And average lag of 1.8ms. This is imperceptible. Lagfree = confirmed!
Sounds good.
Topic Starter
I've been prototyping a case.

This is an early prototype so the case doesn't fit properly and looks bad, but would there be interest? It would be 3-5 USD delivered, or cheaper if bundled with the converter. The source is also open so if you own a 3D printer you can make it yourself.

Pictures inside the spoilerbox...
I'd like a case when I buy one yeah, would be nice.
I'm happy that I was able to help you and give you the thought of doing cases for them. Given any thought to making them in different colors?

Any colour, so long as it's black...

I'll see if I can do colour choice. No confirmation yet.

Haha ok
Can't wait till I can get my hands on this. Got a taiko game for Wii for Christmas two years back and couldn't play it since the game is region locked.

Will you ship it to Brazil when it's available?

I hear that in Brazil post can take a very long time. I will ship there, but can make the package ed if you require the additional guarantee.
This looks SO amazing! I'd love to use this for Taikojiro, actually. Would it only work with Osu?

//also if possible could I be emailed when they arrive? I don't wanna miss them or anything :3
Topic Starter
The converter pretends to be a keyboard - as long as the keys are set to the same ones you use in Taikojiro, it will work fine. I will release the configuration app when I start shipping converters.

If you subscribe to this thread you will get an email when someone posts. I will post as soon as they arrive! I expect them here by Friday - fingers crossed :)
I just recently got a tatacon and when I Bluetooth connected it to my PC, it worked on osu but I had to hit ACTUAL SMASHING strength to get just one hit and I think it's the problem with the wii so I am really looking forward to this. I also ire you on how you have been working on this for a year!!
So when do you think the final product will be ready and ready to ship, I really need this!

I know right!? I have heard that putting a towel or cloth over it helps. I don't really understand how, but I tried it and it helps a little so you don't have to use the force that you would use to cut the branch off of a tree with an ax XD.

They're here!

Building...

Complete!

2 important notes
  • The cases aren't ready yet. If you purchase now you won't get a case.
I underestimated some costs and the price had to be raised to $25. Shipping is still free!
If you are happy with this, go buy them here! I will ship all purchases within 3 business days of payment. :)

While you're at it, the Chrome web app is now public. You will need it to configure buttons, LEDs, debouncing, and for future firmware updates.
Ahhhh, yissss! I been creeping on this thread for ages! My order has been made!
heck, i've only got 20$ :// next time for sure! ^^
Ordered mine, looking forward to it!
I'll on this first batch actually because I can't use it right now, but I'm looking forward to see footage of people playing and using one, that would be pretty cool!
Ill be waiting for the cases to come out so when will that be, and also how much stock do you have because I surely wouldn't want it to run out and I won't be able to buy it! :( :(

I have 12 left. If I run out, I will simply order more :)

Cases.... fortnight? I don't have a 3D printer so there's a lot of shuffling getting other people to print them for me.

I also was insterested on your case, but I'm afraid you run out of converters by the time you get them ready...

Would you make your 3D models available for people printing their own cases? In that case, I think I could ask a friend of mine to print it for me :)

Absolutely! The unfinished cases are in .scad format in the Github repo. When they are finished, I'll also release .stl files which any 3D printer s!
Oh and if you have time can you show us a example like a video or something that shows the usb converter and a tatacon in use so I could see the lag free results and just how hard or soft you need to hit, but you dont have to I'm just curious :D

I'm about to order more boards, but I wanted to ask people's opinions - currently there's a USB A port on the converter. It's like a USB flash drive or a dongle of sorts.

Would people prefer micro USB, like on their phone? Pros: can get a longer cable out of it. Cons: If you don't have a cable already it's 1 extra thing you need.

I would want it to be just the USB for computer, more easier just plug it in right away right?
Topic Starter
I have just ordered 50 more boards, same style as the first batch. I estimate 1.5 months delivery. Hopefully they don't have component supply issues again!

Still working on the cases - 3D printing comes with its own set of challenges.

I have about 5 boards left from the first batch.
My converter just came in today! Will test out and see if it's worthwhile.
Got mine in the mail just now, unfortunately my drum decided to stop functioning this morning... so I have no way of testing it at this time :| if anyone has a spare one that I can borrow, I would be very grateful. I was planning on doing a series of videos.

Edit: the Aussie candies were a nice touch.
Wow they look amazing (OCD is satisfied that they are all aligned)

Thanks for everyone's ! The first batch is now sold out.

I expect the second batch by late April/early May. By then I should hopefully have nailed the case design too. People who have purchased this batch will be able to 3D print their own case :)

Thanks!
Anyone who needs one before May can pm me. I can't really afford a new drum with a baby on the way... $25 shipped. US buyers only.
Ah! Mine came today! (I hadn't said earlier, but I had scrapped up enough money to buy one! ;3) I can't test it now since i'm actually still remodeling my drum, but I can do it later. I can update then! Thanks so much @montymintypie!! :D! (For the little gifts too :33)

EDIT: I had finished fixing my drum, and i've gotta say, this works wonders! I love it so much. There's no delay at all for me. I can now play songs that are not on TnT Wii with a tatacon, and effectively! Thank you again!! :3!
Topic Starter
Excellent to hear @MakkipMaster :)

New updates - I bought a 3D printer. Delivery sometime next week. If all goes well, this means I can add cases to all future converters for no extra cost :)
Thats awesome!
Woohoo finally got mine. It looks amazing. Works perfectly! I love the LED's. Great job. I was wondering if you could send me a 3d printed shell that I could add to it? I'd be willing to pay extra for it.

Super duper easy. Completely plug and play, with the Chrome app to change the key bindings.

3D printing is hard and the next batch is still being produced. Thank you all for your patience.

I´ve been thinking for a while to use a tatacon, is it easy to install this?
Yes it is! You simply plu in the tatacon to the device, then plug the device in to your computers usb slot. Simple as that!
Hey awesome project monty. I had bought a tatacon and all the wii crap a while back but once i got osu open I found myself drowning in lag ;-;
poor tatacon has been sitting in the closet for months now thanks to that. I wish i had known about your project beforehand. Do you have that next batch(with cases) finished yet? I'd love to have a converter.

Received information from supplier:
-PCB has been ready.
-All of materials will be got on May 23.
-PCBA assembly will be started on May 24.
-The goods will be shipped on May 25.
Thus new estimate is Mid June for more stock :)
Would be awesome, if that works...
Thinking about getting a tatacon drum maybe.
Topic Starter
To all those following, thanks again for the patience :)

If you're thinking of buying one, could you fill this survey on case colour? I'll be able to offer white, black, blue and red and would like to know roughly how much to print of each. If there's big demand for another colour I will buy more filament.

PCBs have shipped and I should receive them within 2 weeks. It may take a bit longer to start shipping since that'll coincide with my exams for this semester. But almost there :D

montymintypie wrote: 446c1i

Done.
Looking foward to get one, even if it will take a while :D
First of all, hi to the community. Noob here. Made an just to write in this thread and discovered Osu! on the way :D

I wanted to congratulate montymintypie for such awesome board, one of the coolest I've seen in my life and this comes from someone with several Cave PCBs at home. I wanted to buy a couple of boards with blue and red boxes although my daughter would prefer pink :D I'll be checking for updates. Keep up the good work!
Just wondering, when the first post said to expect a resupply this June, is that recent (2016)? Does it work with cheap knockoff Tatacons? And does osu! automatically detect it when plugged in? And will this batch have cases?
Topic Starter
Yes, this June 2016! This parcel is taking its time to arrive at my house...

I own both genuine and knockoff, works on both. Even works on the very expensive Hori controllers.

Osu doesn't need to detect the drum as it pretends to be a keyboard. However I do like navigating songs with the drum, expect that to come to osu when it becomes open source.

Yes to cases for this batch - printer is ready!
Topic Starter
Boards are here! Parcel sure took a beating...

I need to finish my exams then solder the boards up. I don't expect it to take more than a week from now.

The new revision is slightly smaller than the last and will fit the case better, too:
SPOILER
Old on top, new on bottom

Thoughts as I finalise cases - what option would people prefer?

  • Cases are glued and cannot be taken apart without snapping. Stronger.
Cases are clipped and look a little worse, but can be taken apart if you want.
Just got into Taiko and am interested in this.

I probably wouldn't mod it, so I would prefer the glued version.
If the case is strong enough with clipped parts, i'd say you can go for clipped.
I dont mind if its glue or clipped for my reasons :)
Topic Starter
Status update:

Cases will be strong and hold the board very well without the need for glue.

I have gone through many prototypes:

The cases for the old and new versions are on Thingiverse now.

Almost ready, but I am fixing some print quality issues. I want to make sure people receive the best quality product.

They should be in stock very soon from what ive seen. Also this is for monty, i had a suggestion for a new color, the official osu! Shade of pink. I think it would be pretty nice to have that as a color option.
Topic Starter
Mere days away (for real this time!). I've finally got the quality up to scratch, the solution is to just print everything really slowly. I'm printing ~8 of each colour so I actually have stock to sell when I open orders. It's about 10 hours of printing so including breaks, 2 days absolute tops. Prepare your wallets :)

You're making me broke. Purchased 3 new rolls - osu! pink, silver and lime green.

Have also ordered the next 50 PCBs. Stock issues should subside :)

The rear cover is far too small for me to make it an official option, but if someone wants to mix and match, just leave a note when you purchase.

Dannnggggg those look nice. Any chance of a limited transparen edition? Haha
I totally would go for a transparent one, especially since they used to have a face on the board. But I was impatient and bought a white one as soon as they came out. :P
My tatacon just arrived in the mail, and after hours of butthurt trying to pair my Wiimote I got it to work. I note in the product features that it's so sensitive you can bounce your sticks for multihits; trying out the tatacon, though, I noticed it takes a good amount of force whacking it to get a hit. Is the converter more sensitive than the Wiimote, or is it a hardware thing? Because I really don't want to get noise complaints from my neighbors, during the night it sounds as loud as a real drum. :?

It can be heard throughout a household but not by neighbors. I ordered mine when it first came out which would be nice to get a clear case for.
well my converter came in today, i will say the 0 delay claim is true and it's really fun to use! still trying to get used to how to actually control the drumsticks and hit the correct part of the drum, i find myself often hitting a dead part of the drum when i try to hit kats c:

i think my drum is just trash though because it's having a lot of trouble ing even the most basic hits. i messed around with debouncing settings and stuff, and nothing seemed to make any difference. the drum was new and it's the same one that comes with taiko wii games, but i can't really test the drum on its own without the game.

regardless, after a 2+ hour session playing random maps to test it out, i have to say it's a lot of fun! i'll definitely do some more testing to confirm it's just the drum having problems and not the converter c:

That's just how the normal tatacon is. Luckily, there are some mods you can do that will make it work better.

Here's the guide I used: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.ph ... tcount=117

This cork plate worked without needing any modifications: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000 ... UTF8&psc=1

For steps 9-10, I couldn't get a 5 mm hole puncher, so I stuffed the holes with tissue and put tape over the holes. I also stuffed some tissues into the empty area shown in step 3 to lessen the impact from hits.

You might have to do some more modifications after testing (some of the rubber would make the kat parts too sensitive on mine, so I had to cut those pieces of rubber off), but if you're willing to do that, the results are very noticeable.

On another note, I haven't gotten my converter yet, but I can't wait to use it. I might make a video on it if I can properly record it and show the improvement in delay.

That actually helps quite a bit. I'll have to try out the style you were holding the sticks with, I was trying it the way people always do it in the arcade TnT. Maybe I can get mine as responsive as yours.
