Project Restarted (!!). TODO: Redo description and add songs on a weekly basis
April 6 2014: I cannot update this week. I'll be going on vacation for a couple of days orz (plus I feel lazy. Been mapping another map @@)

The aim of this thread is to help and guide mania players in improving their skills. A lot of people are asking what songs they should play first, and/or what song is good enough for them to improve their skills, so I decided to make a list of mania songs and organized them in a way I see fit.

(For a discussion on how to improve/play osu!mania, please see this thread by Drace: t/146615)

I divided the difficulties into 4 categories. Beginner, Novice, Advance, and Expert.

For the difficulties, I have spread the difficulties into 10 levels each. For now, I (along with Louis) have created a list of Beginner difficulty that only contains ranked maps and some acceptable maps.

Do take note that the list will only contain maps I feel good enough to be played by people, and that will include unranked maps as well, as long as it is of good quality.

More songs will be added in the list as time es by, and you can suggest songs to be added in this thread. If you also feel that the some songs are placed wrong, please do point it out, along with the reason, so we can fix it.

NOTE: No more choosing maps to be added on the list or something like that. I will be adding everything on a weekly basis. I'll just tag new maps, and maps that I like or something. Maps that I recommend to be played.

1. The most important thing for this thread is PLAYER . So far, Entozer and I have reviewed each map to see if they are good enough for playing, and discussed to decide the "level" of the map. As hard as we try to accurately measure the difficulties, they'll always be subjective and prone to error. By having the community comment on errors, we can make this list as accurate as possible.
2. As our mappool grows, it becomes harder to keep track of each and every map. If you notice any errors such as incorrect spelling or broken links, please tell us, and we'll try our best to fix them. If any of these maps are deleted, we'll try our best to the mapper, and obtain their permission to re- to Dropbox.
3. If you see your map listed here, and you plan to make major changes to it (including deleting), please let us know if possible. It's not necessary, but it definitely saves a lot of time and effort.
4. We appreciate map suggestions!

Something like this is very helpful to orientate players when the difficulty criteria are all over the place. It could easily push them to set up goals and ultimately increase their improvement rate.

This is exactly what I needed. The rating system for Osu!mania is all over the place, I can SS 5* maps but only B 2* maps. I'm looking forward to the release of the novice collection, thanks for the thread.

I have updated the list; adding an incomplete novice section and included the newly ranked mania song in the list.

The novice list was quite hard to put together, so there might be some errors in it. The songs might be misplaced as "harder" or "easier" than other songs. If anyone has found some inconsistencies or anything alike, please post in this thread \o/

1. When would be a good time to move on from one song to the next one? Once you get FC or something like that?

2. Have you listed the songs difficulty-wise in the sub-categories. For example in Novice 10, are the songs difficulty sorted from easiest at the top to hardest at the bottom?

You don't have to practice to some certain skill level to move on. The idea for this is to give you an idea of how hard these maps are in a detailed scale. Personally, I try to find the maps that I can barely , or even maps that I fail, and practice on that stuff, rather than stuff I can A, or S, or FC.

And how does that work for you? Just a question of interest.

Well I just broke a skill barrier, thanks to this playthrough of an o2jam chart I converted. It seems to be the fastest way I've found to learn things. But it also means your accuracy suffers on easier stuff. In my experience anyway.

1) Just as Bobbias said, the list is just to give people an idea on how hard the maps are, so you don't have to drill/train in the maps before you move on.

It would be a good time to move on the next level if you can "" the map in your own standards. Personally I only consider my plays a once I can have less than 10% (miss + 50s), since the HP drain varies from one map to another. A rough indicator of a would be a B or above score in the maps.

Let's see how big of a list we can make first. These are just suggestions, and we're not aiming to put every map that ever existed here. (now THAT would be a lot of work)
In order to minimize maintenance necessity, we're mainly aiming for listing ranked maps, as well as relying on the community to find errors here and there.
It shouldn't be much effort to re- a map with permission, or fix level ratings of a certain map, even if both Entozer and I become inactive s.

And by the time that happens, this thread will be long outdated, and hopefully, someone else will be willing to maintain it in our place.

Yeah, I see this being incredibly helpful for now, but dropping off in usefulness as mania matures. But for the time being, this should be a great pace to send newcomers to find stuff.

On second thought, it might take a bit longer, since we have to add more maps to Novice and make some difficulty re-adjustments first. (Did we make Novice 10 too easy/hard? How difficult should Advanced 10 be? How can we ensure that the maps in Advanced branch out to cover different patterns? etc.)

Thought I'd add some of my experience with this list, perhaps it'll be of any help to you, perhaps not.

First off, to me smooooch (7k HD) was a lot harder to handle than Far East Nightbird (lvl 13). I don't know if this has to do with me personally having an easier time reading the patterns in Nightbird generally or if smooooch really is harder.

And I'd also like to point out that G59 (lvl 18) feels a lot harder than the other songs in the same tier.

Just some thoughts I had guys, keep up the good work.

Well the jump from NOV 9 to 10 looks more like NOV9->ADV2 to me. Those songs play alot more difficulty than the previous level
Especially between the levels 15-20 and after a little over 20 there is a noticeable difficulty increasement since the parts just bump up to get a bit tougher, i wouldnt call this novice anymore

I'd say it's encouraged to find the speed that's most comfortable for you. I change my speed based on the BPM of the song. For example, I read 200-215 BPM or so at speed 13, and 150-160 BPM at 18. I worked my way up to this speed by starting out slower and increasing the speed occasionally.

On another topic somebody said that osu!standard conversions where not really good compared to osu!mania mapped maps, that where not as fun.

After coming to this topic, now I can see why.

I mostly came here because, for the most part, I only had conversions, as there are few songs for osu!mania, let alone songs that I like. And it has been a blast since then, even if I don't really like the song, playing mania maps that are also adequated to my skills it's really fun. I specially love Liselotte mania maps. So much fun.

Based on that chart, I would be on between Beginner 9 - Novice 1. Depending on where you make the cut. I can +85% Beginner 10 and +90% on Beginner 9, Novice 1 however I can barely make it above 80% I also seem to fare worse on songs that demand me to press the leftmost key (A on my keyboard) a lot. And I'm lefty!

Deleted all my auto converts \o/, i think im up to novice 10 atm woot~

Regarding personal experience with this list. I have to say that Smoooooooch (NM 7k) is definitely way easier than Giant O.T.N.

Only my Railgun seems fine there, but Smoooooooch is way easier compared to OmR. Giant O.T.N, I think it's on the same level as Only with my Railgun

Levels are based on EZ2ON ranks, but are slightly revised to cover O2-style(hold) songs.
1~6: total Beginner (players with less than 50 pc should be able to handle this well)
7~13: Novice (players with up to 1000 pc can handle them)
14~15: Higher Novice
16~18: Advanced
19+: Expert

While I do find that list to be pretty consistent with the one on the first post, I would definitely NOT put Only My Railgun 4k HD above 7k NM. While you have to press the keys faster, I find having to deal with 4k way easier than 7k

Based on that list I would be lv 13-14. Wich again, is consistent with the other list where I was ~Beginner 10-Novice 2

Edit: Entozer, you got my post wrong (poor english on my part), I meant to say that Only My Railgun 7k NM and Giant O.T.N. should be Beginner 10 while Smooooooooch should drop to Beginner 9

wow i swear i knew dynasty was on the top of the songs. that one is so hard to play

I just started playing and I'm doing the Novice level (3~4). I have to say:

Catastrophe [Normal] - Entozer //U
agony (TV Size) [Normal] - woc2006
Shinseitaiju [LV.9] - ExPew //U
Rhythmical Planet [Normal] - ljqandylee

agony was by far the easiest map on this level, Catastrophe was way harder. Then again Rhythmical Planet and Shinseitaiju were on a complete different level for me, being maps I could either fail or clear with a maximum rank of B, while agony was an easy A, and Catastrophe was a few retries A.

Thanks, this has helped me break s skill barrier which I haven't been able to in the past week. Thing is, I can level 36 G59 half the time, and the other half I can't. And there aren't any songs on the levels under G59! D:

I hope this gets updated more! This has helped me alot! I'm at another skill barrier again, and the songs I play are otherwise too easy or too hard. I can't seem to find songs that are just right for me right now.

Now, for a bit of .
I just started playing 7k after a good amound of time playing 4K, so maybe my 4K affect what map i can or cannot play but, in the beginner section:

- In beginner 3, Flower Flag is too hard (should go in beginner 5 i think)
- In beginner 5, If it takes a lifetime is way too hard, i managed S on the other one but i can barely do B there, should go up maybe to 7
- In beginner 6, Uni is too easy, i would put it in beginner 3

and just to show my point, i'll add some screenshot of my collection so you can compare the rank and % and see how much try i put in some of the song:

When you are giving , please try to tell us why you have trouble with the map. Sometimes a map can be easier than another one, but you end up with a lower score because you aren't used to a pattern it uses. This is also good because it helps you think about your play, and figure out what you have trouble with, and what you are good at. Learning where your skills lie is very important for improving. Once you know what you are weak at, you can concentrate on trying to get better at it.

So to awnser your question Bobbias:

i compared Uni and flower flag to determine that Flower flag should be higher than it is and uni lower, the reason behind that being:

Flower flag has: Stairs and grace notes, 2 thing you dont find in uni, yes it is only pattern that i aren't used to but it still make it harder. I also think that uni is more ''relax'' to play, there is less part where you have a high concentration of note, it's more a constant thing (i'm saying that out of what i , might be mistaken).

For the mario song, the hard part about it is how the bpm change and the presence of SV, as you play the easiest difficulty of the song before you could assume that you get used to it, but i didn't feel like i was able to do it at all.

If i'm still not accurace enough about why i think these song aren't at the good level, feel free to tell me and i'll get a better explanation when i have the time because right now i dont. (i'm typing this while listening to my math teacher soo it's not like i can go and play the 3 song to extract the ''hard part'' from them and expose it here)

Tatsh - Xepher [Insane] : This one is subject to frequent updates, but overall it feels like an ADV 4 when considering the patterns and the SV changes together.

I might be wrong about the ADV 3 and 4 maps I suggested as I don't really have the skill to play them correctly yet but I think my guesses are not too far from the truth. Tell me what you think.

Thank you for the suggestion! I added some songs you mentioned without questioning them since I still how it was mapped (But I still have to check them soon.) About moving G59 to Adv 1, I guess I can agree with you. I drafted it in Nov 10 since I did not take into consideration the speed of the map. You can think of it as me saying you have to have that kind of speed already when you are at advanced as a prerequisite, but then again not everyone likes to play fast song. (Some likes high-density ones but slow, some fast but few, some etcetc...) Anyway, I moved it. Let's see how it goes.

I still am not sure about the last 3 songs you mentioned since I haven't checked them, but I added them for now.

About smooooch, The patterns in this map are indeed somehow easy, though I guess we can put them in Adv for that. I'm still thinking whether SV-changes reading skill should be taken into consideration or not.

I just started playing and I'm doing the Novice level (3~4). I have to say:

Catastrophe [Normal] - Entozer //U
agony (TV Size) [Normal] - woc2006
Shinseitaiju [LV.9] - ExPew //U
Rhythmical Planet [Normal] - ljqandylee

agony was by far the easiest map on this level, Catastrophe was way harder. Then again Rhythmical Planet and Shinseitaiju were on a complete different level for me, being maps I could either fail or clear with a maximum rank of B, while agony was an easy A, and Catastrophe was a few retries A.

Hmm, I have to go recheck those maps I guess. Though I agree with Agony being easy (as from what I , it is quite a slow song, but with LN,) but I still need to review them. I might have put it wrongly at Novice 3 since at a higher level, lower bpms tend to be harder to press x_x. But thank you for the .

In this difficulty, songs starts to have a pattern unique to the song itself, and those patterns cannot be applied to other songs most of the time. Players at this level starts to learn about specialized patterns. At this level, the type of players starts to branch out. Some players will start to play songs that are mostly Hold-oriented, some play songs that have a lot of speed changes, and some likes to play song with high density.
