Wait, what? Since when we are able to animate "hitcircleoverlay". O.o

Tested and it's working but... geez...

Okay, when I finish my actual skin project, I'm going to do an update and a lot of testing because there was too many changes (probably). >.<
in .ini file, where do we have to write .ini part of osu!mania? in [General]?
Topic Starter
For osu!mania settings you must have separate files - 4k.ini, 5k.ini, 6k.ini 7k.ini and 8k.ini

Just to inform you guys, you can now skin backgrounds for widescreen resolutions, yes I mean pause, fail etc. (The safest should be 1366x768 resolution). But be careful with it, and always check how it will look in 4:3. Or as alternative if you are going to post your skin at forum, make 2 versions of it.

Like I said before, in nearest days I will start testing everything from beginning and will provide any new informations. ^.^
ranking screen too s widescreen, but every elements there aren't widescreen (just the 5 circles that spinning slowly around grade element that affected by widescreen)
Either I'm just not guessing the right dimensions, or ranking- no longer covers the entire screen.

That works! I wonder if we could be able to make playfields widescreen...

Yes, now we are able to put widescreen background. (probably in beatmaps too). If you use 1024x768 playfield, it will be resized to fit any widescreen resolution.
BUT if you use widescreen playfield, osu! will add black bars on upper and bottom part of screen. It depends with one resolution you are using so the bars will be larger or smaller. As I said before again the safest should be 1366x768 to have it working on every aspec ratio.
Is there a way to add characters to the side of the screen when you get enough no-misses? Or did i overlook something? :?

EDIT- Nevermind,I found out how ^^;

They are called combobursts and first appear when you have 30 combo.

Thanks for the help, but I already figured it out ^^;

Great. I never knew hitcircle overlay could be animated.
Is it just me or does a 1366x768 matchsetup-background.png not fit properly?
Topic Starter
Because that background it's still in progress. The official background is only in 1024x768 and you wouldn't be able to have it on widescreen. The main problem with it, is that the numbers and texts like "Game type" "Mods" "Beatmaps" are part of background.

options and lobby has been removed. Instead of them you can see your menu-background if you are er.

For matchsetup-background check if you haven't made any mistake, since it's working just fine for me.
why options- and lobby-background has been removed?
Topic Starter
Ask peppy, not me. ^^;
and there's one more thing
after the last update the lobby-bg still work but then i changed it and only then i doesnt work anymore
Topic Starter
It could be minor error, it doesn't work for me.
Like I said "menu-background.jpg" is used also as lobby-background now. Don't know if it will be or it is actually possible to change it to use other bg than menu. Maybe it is er future? I don't know, don't have er so it's impossible for me to test it. ^^;
er doesn't have lobby-bg either. :(
I WANT A FULLSCREEN RANKING BACKGROUND ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)
playfield is ranking screen background.
ranking- covers the 5 circles that rotating around grade-A ~ grade-D
MLGnom, you need to update this ~ :D
seems templateskin.osk linked in this topic is corrupted (do not open correctly as zip file).

Tested right now and it's working just fine.

All you should do is and double click on it... (as long as it's associated with osu!)

skin extraction process same as beatmap extraction.

[New Skin Folder] is based from [.osk Name]
so if you put something like in this tree (sample: http://puu.sh/1JNDh)
Inside thCtC[RF49].osk
+ thCtC[RF49]
|-- applause.wav
|-- button-left.png
|-- etc...
instead (sample: http://puu.sh/1JNDx)

it will give

Okay guys I need to get some information and hope someone can help me.

What I need :
1. What kind of skins Taiko players consider as "Pro" skin (Something like this exists?)? I think most of them uses official version of skin but still... (There is not many skins that have skinned this mod :/)
2. Same question but for CtB. How people should skin fruits to help player?
3. And for osu!mania... I don't really know what kind of skins people needs/prefer. I will be grateful for any info about osu!mania skins and what kind of skin people prefer.
For mania i think there arent too much helpfull things. Notes is probably the most important. They have a great effect when playing or the stagelight. You can have that big or invisible or just hardly noticeable, it all makes a difference what a player prefers. Column width is also a good thing to edit in the skin if a player has less less trouble with reading wide or super wide skin. The lighting effect can also make some difference when you notice it when playing but i think it is minimal because you have to pay attention for other things. I dont think there is any sort of in skins for mania that makes you alot better, only preference.

Edit: For CTB note im not a really CTB player but i can imagine a round fruit skin that looks the same for anything, like just a blue ball or something could make a difference. Also making the numbers transparent maybe? Since i read some people complaining they are blocking in fl mode but i dont know. Just an idea
Topic Starter
Thank you guys, that helps a lot, but still would like to have few more opinions.
And would be great if someone could tell me something about "pro" taiko skin.
(I think, I will need to find some good players and ask directly :/)

CloudEdge wrote: b2v64

Lobby background has been removed. Now background of main-menu is used as lobby background.
Cool~ I'm a bit of a newbie, but this is pretty helpful since I'm just starting to make a skin and I just have no idea at all how to do it.
for osu!mania:
no pro osu!mania player plays with a ddr based (or anything similar) arrows as the notes nor use a clear playfield.
grid colors should be alternating, mania-hint should be perfectly aligned to the judgment line, and note colors should be contrasting.
alternating grid colors are better than alternating grid transparencies with the same color.
some people prefer copying the note color setup from whatever similar game they play to make it more familiar.
border between stage sides and playfield should be noticeable.
if you plan to not use column lines, make sure to at least put line(s) on the center column(s). those center lines will help you a lot, especially in 6K, 7K or 8K.
don't use overrated stage lightings. (the lighting that pops up behind the grids when you hit notes)
try not to use lighting N's and L's that are too flashy, people focus their eyes on that point when they want a high accuracy (although I use a flashy one since I look higher on the screen while playing)
"don't block the driveway", hitbursts will always be there, so never make your hitbursts too high. smaller or thinner is better for some people. just don't forget to make 300 different from 300!.
use a larger miss hitbursts than the other hitbursts.
i prefer using note holds with a vertical gradient, it tells me how long a slider is and tells me when it's about to end.
make your stage right and stage left as fancy as possible, no one looks there while playing.
try not to make the hp bar too distracting.

taiko:
i don't really play taiko, but I think it would be better if the stage right contrasts the note colors (blue and red-ish)
don't use a distracting pippidon animation
colors should be dominant on the outer part of the circles
don't use a stage right glow that is too bright/glowing
make sure the hitbursts don't block incoming circles
make sure that the border between stage left and stage right is noticeable

ctb:
i also don't play ctb but...
use drop shadows for the fruits
try to make the fruits look as closely as possible to each other
make use of the fruit overlays to add lighting effects and shadows to the fruits to make the fruits more visible
try to make the font simpler, thinner, and smaller

meh can't think of any more now >.<

it's somewhere beneath feature requests. It's about skinning slider tracks.

Holy Crap... making proper tutorial is way harder than I thought and it's taking much more time than expected. </3

1. Introduction - done!
2. Basic - 75% - need to add way more information here.
3. Skin.ini - 95% - need to test something.
4. Standard skin elements - 5% work in progress <3
5. Catch the beat elements - 0% - need to create it first...
6. Taiko elements - 75% - need to rewrite few things, and explain it better.
7. osu!mania skin elements - 50% - need to update it and explain properly.
8. Creating .osk file - done!
9. Posting a skin - 75% - need to add few things, explain it a little better.

So, I have started working on Standard skin elements. Hope this time it will be more helpful than previous one.

Also, I have added 2 small tutorials how to cut characters for comboburst in comboburst section. It should somehow help... I think so...?
Someone will need to correct my crappy grammar after I finish with everything.
Nice update.
Aah, such a nice tutorial. Helped me with creating my own skin soooo much! >3<

But I don't really get why it says you can't do countdowns horizontally.. (made one myself and it works perfectly..) o-o
Here is a screenshot of the countdown (yh, it's terrible, but who cares.. D:), since I can't really explain how it works.. xD *sucks at english*
Topic Starter
I have found something guys!

Something that really helps with making countdowns for any resolution.
In wide-screen update, anchor positions and behaviour of countdown have been changed. So it's possible to make horizontal countdown. <3
Most likely countdown is not restricted by size any more.

How this works :
As always height of countdown should be 768px.

Count 3 - Anchor position of it's at left side. Left side of picture will start here.
Count 2 - Anchor position of it's at right side. Right side of picture will start here.
Count 1 - Anchor position is at centre of screen. Centre of your picture will be here.

But that count 3 is first, next is count 2, and count 1 will be covered by these two.

Well... let's continue with update...

Edit :

Aww, darn it. u.u
But oh well, maybe it'll be added some day.. gotta keep switching skins then, I guess. >o<
i can myself requesting for a different mania hp bar, since i use a 1366x768 hp bar so it appears on the bottom in standard. I'm just not that sure if I actually requested that or that was just an imagination

I had made a discovery involving the osu!mania .ini files. This discovery involves the numbers of ColumnWidth (CW) and ColumnStart (CS).

These numbers deals with how many pixels on a 640x480 screen. When you're playing a osu!mania map on a W x H screen,

The left side of the play area starts at CS*H/480 and the right side ends at (CS+Sum of CWs)*H/480).

I made that discovery after realizing when I play on a 4:3 window with the settings CS =440 and (sum of CWs) = 200, the right side of the play area was just at the right side of the window.

The maximum width for the left stage sprite is 738 pixels, which covers the left side of the play area when you set ColumnWidth to 460.

HD skinning is here!

peppy wrote: 6w4l42

Double resolution skinning is now ed. Simply provide files with @2x suffix as you normally would. You still need to provide a standard resolution version too.

Example:
hit300g.png (300x300)
[email protected] (600x600)

High resolution sprites are used for resolutions 1600x and higher.
Soon I will continue with updates, please wait patiently. <3

Why would you need this? You know there is few different aspect ratios and if you would like to make background for every of them it would take some pointless space... especially if someone is using only one.

Just make it 1366x768 and you will cover every standard aspect ratio, because on lower width (4:3) pictures are cut from both sides.

Before someone tell me "But my bg doesn't fit for that Aspect ratio but fit perfectly on another!". So do/use a bg that will fit to every resolution or just make another version of skin specially for that ratio...

It's kinda hard to make it the same as SD without original work file.
You can try to resize it with correct interpolation. (As I know people recommend " Bicubic Smoother" for enlarging, I personally prefer using Lanczos interpolation). You should try few others and use the one that fit you most. If your image is a little blurred after resizing, you can use "unsharp mask" filter.
that the smaller picture is, the harder to enlarge it smoothly.
Could you add that (more worded out) to the opening post? As of current happenings, I think it'd come in handy for more people.

Sure, in few days I'm going to continue with updates (probably this weekend), so I will add that. :3
Now is there a skinnable font for the song title bar in Taiko mode?
Topic Starter
Yup, rename your font as "Taiko.ttf" and add to your skin folder.
Thanks for the advice:
my osu keeps hanging when I play a map in Taiko and then quit the map with my custom Taiko font (in which I renamed it to Taiko.ttf, of course), am I doing it wrong? ?_?
also: the font DIDN'T load at all too. :c
