What's the point of using Linux unless you're a developer or something? Genuinely curious because so far it looks a bit inconvenient to use.

To escape Microsoft & Apple's grip on your computer usage & Linux offers far better and easier customisability then Windows/MacOS

I'm glad I stopped playing Roblox. I'd rather play anything other than Roblox.

Fair enough, their management of the platform is dogwater

The best way to describe Linux in a nutshell. The benefit is that you know what you're doing with the software, which you own. Period.

runs way better than windows.

Now that I think about it, I've probably asked "what's the point of linux" a couple times, and have had it explained to me every single time.

I'd probably just try it out for the sake of trying it out if I had a spare device, but it seems somewhat inconvenient to use (many things being uned, setup). Not sure if that's a meme or if that's reality, but that's always the impression I've gotten out of Linux.

in my case its been a very smooth experience but it really feels like a coin toss if it works for someone or not

I'm late and I only saw this because I was bored and came here.

Most of the reasons are philosophical in their nature, like how programs are distributed, how open the source code of your software is, how and where you configure it, etc. You fundamentally have to try it and see if these differences are worth your time or not.

it's good if you don't want to play games (or if u only want to play osu) it's so much faster than windows

tbh nowadays lots of games runs on GNU/Linux, the ones that don't are those with anticheat

I personally disagree. Linux gaming is something that can be done without much hassle. ProtonDB reports that among the top 1000 Steam games, 81% have a gold medal (running more or less out of the box) or higher. On Steam, I can pick most games and they will run without much hassle. The top seller game right now on Steam, Schedule I, runs OOTB on Steam.

There are obviously exceptions, like most modern multiplayer games as most of them use kernel level anti-cheat, but since I don't play them, most games I would play run more than fine on Linux, even outside of Steam.

Linux's speed compared to Windows may be more true now with Windows 11, but even then, I don't believe the difference is significant enough for a complete switch-up. Again, the best reasons to use (better software management, the open nature of the operating system, the freedom of the to choose whenever they want something bleeding edge or stable as bedrock) Linux aren't fully based in metrics, they're based in one's philosophy around computers and technology as a whole.

sadly a lot of the devs for these games don't really want to Linux (*coughs violently* Valorant with its Vanguard anticheat, Roblox)

Any fps because they are scared of penguins (anticheat):
Not ALL. Which absolutely sucks on my end.

Why would Linux benefit from FPS? Everyone tolerated inconsistent higher-latency cursors on Wayland for years because Xorg bad or whatever :p

I'm kind-of serious though, I've seen this since 2016 until last month; yet everyone's been into Wayland for years. I don't get it, but I get the idea that if I'm developing a serious fast-paced FPS, Linux isn't a target for taking it seriously.

That's true, actually. Most of the Linux base is being screwed over as a result of developers not wanting to develop for Linux. It's a bigger audience now, so they better consider it.
