i haven't seen much discussion on this and i think it would be a fun complex way to play taiko with some added speed benefits if you learn to control it but i have had some issues getting a key layout down so far i have done z x c v n m , . then i think of it as 4 sets of kd alternating the sets from left to right i have done this layout so all my brain has to think is left is blue and right is red this too avoids the weakest finger (pinkies) taking up just 1 color but this could be solved by using thumbs instead i dont have much experience with this layout (played like 10 1* maps at 0.5x speed) or in taiko (~28 hours in play time) so i cant say much on how patterns will be but i would imagine that you could about double your speed in theory with added levels of complexity for a trade off i would play/test the layout more but i wanted to see if there are any better layouts/way of thinking out there to avoid having to switch later on or if this is even worth trying 8 keys could be too complex for taiko 6 keys could be a better balance if anyone know any players or even discord servers of 8/6k taiko i would be interested in ing too!!!

first forum post :)

edit 1 so i have thought of way better layouts than kdkdkdkd kddkkddk i have tried and worked way better than the other one i should have thought of this first but im dumb and another layout is kkddddkk i havent used this but i have seen some people mention it now on kddkkddk i have been trying to learn to full alt with the little time i spend on taiko but ing the last key i pressed for 2 colors might be too much so i was thinking to change it to going to the next key in the order this way i dont have to the last key i pressed for 2 colors

I played taiko on the switch for a bit and the joycons were set up like:
 k k
 d d
 d d

I imagine you could adapt this layout to play on keyboard with like

r u
f j

Which would basically just be helpful for monocolor streams (e.g. if it's all red you could do like rfujrfujrfujrfuj or something) and could theoretically double your BPM for mono streams.

That being said, I'm pretty sure you're supposed to stick to only 4 keys (without remapping your keyboard or using macros you literally can't legitimately bind 8 keys in osu for taiko)

why only mono streams shouldnt it work for all streams and patterns since your putting less strain on each finger?

osu lazer lets you have 6 keys legitimately and i believe the devs is fine with remapping your keyboard as long as your not avoiding key lock.

I have used this layout on simulators such as TJAPlayer3 and OpenTaiko before. It facilitates TL usage, which is another advantage to this. I will say though- the closest we ever got to having 8 keys would be 6 keys in Lazer. You can now rebind the mouse buttons to be whatever you want.
