AYA thread by also sametdze

give a book, a movie, an anime or manga (or even a videogame) and I will do my best to complete it and write a little essay about it. Or just about single characters or concepts. I have time on my hands and I think I may be able to do it (but please, be something that you yourself have played/read/whatever)

WHAT I DON'T ACCEPT:

-Horror (may be exceptions but generally not)

-Music (I'm not into music and I wouldn't have much to say other than I liked it/not)

-Plot-light videogames (I mostly know how to speak about and i'm interested in talking about the narrative side of things, if the only real thing I can talk about is gameplay design I may not have that much to say)

-Really long stuff (For videogames, make it nor sur 15 hours in howlongtobeat, I generally do exceptions depending on the length of the queue, for anime, keep it under 50 episodes)

-Fandom heavy content (If you need to be part of a fandom to really enjoy or understand something, don't request it)

-Youtube heavy content (Things that one normally interact with via youtube videos, for example, an ARG, no one solves an arg by themselves, you just watch the video about how it got solved, I'm not interested in doing this sort of stuff. I also dislike things that are with the idea of baiting youtube videos or whatever, i'm not matpat, don't expect me to analyze hello neighbour or fnaf)

-ecchi/harem/sexual stuff (i'm not doing this thread to get horny)

-autobiographical stories (feels bad to criticise) these)

as an added requirement, PLEASE have played the game/read the book/etc yourself, don't request things you yourself haven't experienced

I was a fan of this show as a kid however, it's going to be a lot more shaky since i'm just writting what I it being, but I can do this one RN

I think this show overall was pretty good, the concept of the show was really interesting, being both a cute show about penguins (Which are my favourite animal!), and also a parody of the spy genre. Which is a genius combination. And kowalski is the greatest example of the spy genre in this show, being the most logical and more "spy-like", and having the constant joke of "kowalski, analysis". And I think it is a really good character for a comedy, honestly, better than a lot of other comedy shows

One thing that I really appreciate about the show, it's that the characters aren't just only the jokes that they make with them. They're full and kinda well written charactersm having a personality that's independent to the plot of the show. And kowalski is no exception.

TLDR: I just really like this show and I really love kowalski, there are a lot of funny jokes and they're actual characters unlike many other comedies tbh

okay the train video was short so I could just sneak it as a break from reading the manga i'm reading rn

if I understood correctly, the tour was made to showcase the new technologies, since high speed trains was still pretty new at the time, and this apparently was succesfull and people were "omg so fast", however, while I may not kow much about trains, I do know a bit about america itself.

and that is, while the technology was there, and was cheap, and successful, trains are NOT the main form of transformation as they envisioned and to happen. The main way to move in america is with a car. And this is just not a conveniance thing, in many ways trains are the superior way of transporation, it allows people that wouldn't really be able to drive a car move to further places, it's faster, and it's cheaper since you dont need to buy a car. (Also I forgot to mention they're more enviromentally friendly too!)

but, the car itself, is part of the american identity, part of their patriotism. At least with the image of america that I have (i'm not american and never been to america), stuff like seeing a race and drinking bear while doing so is an incredibly patriotic act, same with driving big trucks and stuff. And while amtrak may had the superior way of transporatation, they ended up losing due to american culture, and while trains are a lot more present in asia and parts of europe, the actual tour that they describe was not as successfull as they would have wished, which kinda just raises a lot of questions of if we should prioritize what seems objectively correct over culture. Which is a MASSIVE political and philosophical topic that i'm not getting into.

I think your art is ok. Being completely honest it's not something that's really going to stand out compared to the style of the other artists I follow like cam collins or some weird japanese artists I follow on pixiv. However the art is still good, it reminds me a lot of the style a lot of occidental webtoons has, or even the artstyle some newground flash games used to have, and I do think you habve the skill level in art to actually draw one of these if you were actually determined to do so (Of course you would need to know how to write a story or code but you get my point)

Review Deltarune
I have alraedy beaten deltarune, so I can do this one rn

I feel that the only way to talk about deltarune is to put in context, this is toby fox second agme, that is a follow up to undertale, one of the must influential games of all time, and so far, deltarune just seems to be more and bigger in every sense

The combat has improved, the plot seems more serious and deep, the alternate route is more darker, the story is more ambitious, the game is 7 times longer, etc.

Not only that but we got to consider that deltarune only happened because it was showed to him in a dream (this is real look it up), and undertale only existed as a proof of concept for deltarune, it promises to be a LOT

so, we know undertale tracked morality. Not only with the spare or kill system, but it also tracks stuff like reloads or if this is your second playthrough, this was the thing that really made undertale blow up as it did

but then, in deltarune, while offering the same options, we get a denial of consequences. When you're expecting the same concepts to apply, sparing or killing have no apparent effect on the ending of the chapters.

However, then we got chapter 2 with the weird route, which is not just activated by kiling everyone, but now you got to mentally maniputale one incredibly likeable character with a tragic backstory into killing everyone which is somehow way fucking worse

Not only that, but the game also plays with a concept that undertale really didn't play, and that is layers of separation and distances

I think the most apparent use of this is jevil, that if you think about it, they are on a cell, inside of a basement, of a castle, of a dark world, of a regular, fantasy world, inside a program, inside a computer, inside the real world and the game makes use of that for storytelling, like lancer not being able to travel between worlds, spamton trying to reach heaven, noelle denying the existance of dark worlds, etc

this is no longer about just breaking the fourth wall, this is about having another fourth wall for the protagonist and then having other character break that wall. Given that deltarune is only 25% released at this point and that things for sure will get crazier near the end, the potential deltarune has is absolutely inmense, and having a concept that could be equally as ground breaking as the original undertale, but given this level of polish and preparation, allow me to be hyped

Review Off Topic, do you like the way it is right now, why or why not? What kind of threads make OT more enjoyable for you?
I think people overthink OT, like A LOT, I feel for most of the problems people complain about, it's just stuff that they like to complain about but either dont actually hate it or at least not enough to do anything about it. I'm saying stuff like "OT is dying" or "current thread sucks!!!". I just think that is total BS

however, I will say, since I started on OT I have seen a big shift. I feel a lot more people had less unique posting styles, in fact, most of them shared the same lore-focused, semi-interactive thread. And everything outside that, it would have a lot bigger of a change to get shit on because "it was not effort"

now, it's a lot easier to see how a thread is written and perfectly know who the OP is, people like lostsilver, sametdze, mikey, etc. The is a lot more variety, and some people really put some really big effort into each thread, and there is a lot of people who seem interesting in taking part on each one of them

also, metas seem a lot less frequent, when I started it felt like every other week, and now it's a very rare occurance

I'm my personal opinion, I like the current state of OT, while I do personally think OT isn't dying, I'm my opinion i'm enjoying OT more now than I did in the past, it feels a lot more personal and interesting compared to the lore supremacy of back then

what kind of threads do I enjoy the most?, I do personally engaging al ot in any thread that allows me to be writting for more than 10 seconds or have a disscusion, stuff like the reyalp yume nikki thread, the AYA thread, etc, but those threads are rare, doesn't really do that good, and honestly having too many of them would be bad

so excluding that, I like those competition threads, like the minima speedrunning or the watermelon game, cool to see if anyone actually starts hardcore grinding

and for shitpost threads, AI think the newdweller thread is probably one of the funniest OT threads in recent time, so whatever that type is, I like it

also, update, I've just finished the first movie of the hobbit, i'm nearing the end of the manga i'm reading so I will probably start reading nickelodeon today

Okay I have read nickelodeon (the manga)

Nickelodeon is very strange. I personally went fully blind torwards it, and it seemed to be an drama/experimental anthology from what I had read in the first couple chapters, but it ended up being a comedy anthology with reacurring characters

This manga in many ways feels like a very primitive version of city, but with more explicit jokes, shorter arcs for each character, and without an ovearching plot really uniting the manga

comparing it to city, I enjoyed city a lot more, but mainly because I like the comedy style more (city is a manga created by the same mangaka as nichijou, my favourite comedy of all time)

nickelodeon is a manga that shifts a lot tho, because even if most of it does feel like a comedy manga, there are some pretty serious chapters without any apparent jokes, like chapter 1, so it's really a gamble if the next chapter it's supposed to just be weird/depresing or funny, because there is no way to tell really.

Honestly, it's those weirder chapters I have a problem with, because I don't know what their purpouse is, if they have any purpouse, because the story aren't really that groundbreaking from my opinion and the fact that most chapters doesn't really have any consequence on the next, I dont really know what the purpouse of these chapters are, it feels like it just makes the pacing of the jokes worse

this is just a really strange manga that I dont quite understand

ok yeah no I've only played like an hour but i'm already hating the game, i'm not going to subject myself to this

This game just doens't feel like a single player game, it feels like you took a game like destiny 2 and then just made it singleplayer, totally ignoring the fact that the structure of a multiplayer game does not work in a singleplayer one

for example, in most single player games, while they usually have some balance testing and stuff, if something ends up being a little overpowered it doesn't matter, you can choose to just not use it if the game didn't really require it. If you find a way to cheese a boss, the game will usually just hand out the win to you, the game is non-competitive so it doesn't matter if you found a way to cheat

this was my idea of what the game was going to be, so I played like that, however, I felt the game was pushing me back at every single chance it had

oh I obtained a cool item!, cool but you dont have enough experience to use it, you must get to at least x level to use it

I'm confident on my fighting skill, I can take that elite down: wrong, you cant since you're not the adequate level, it's just going to two-shot you

well, I saw that stealth can oneshot enemies, i'm just going to sneak up to them, do this whole section while stealthing, and then just oneshot them: wrong, the attack only really does a certain ammount of damage, so you cant really one-shot enemies with a level higher than yours

the whole thing seems like you're playing a live service multiplayer game, but that's not how a single-player should look, in a multiplayer game, certain choices are made because if not it could ruin the experience for other players, this game is doing those decisions because they thought they were cool

not only that, but this game literally features an option for your horse to travel to quest objectives automatically, and a cash shop, in a single player game

this is the first single player game i've ever played that had a cash shop

i'm just baffled by this game, I haven't played too many AAA games in general, so I really didn't expect an assassins creed to look like that. And the AAA games that I have played are stuff like baldur's gate 3, where if you're skilled enough, you can take on a stronger enemy than you, maybe even use the environment to oneshot it, and then steal all their loot, which has no level requirement associated. Because this is the standard, or at least it should be, not whatever the fuck this game tried

Yeah, there's also this whole thing with named fighters you can kill to rank up, would make sense in a pvp game but is kinda useless in a single player, you can entirely ignore it as far as I know
Also having all gear stats be linked only to level makes all legendaries obsolete as soon as you level up and pick up even lowest tier gear
It's kinda sad, I'd love a good action/adventure game in ancient Greece (other than old God of War), it's almost endless copyright free content you can use any way you want and pretty much everyone is at least somewhat familiar with it (especially since Hades), how is there not a good AAA game like that?
What about Silent Voice?
sad ;(

that's a good one, of the movies I initially watched when I was getting into anime and I still really love it to this day

A silent voice is a romance drama anime movie, you could probably group it in the same category as stuff like I want to eat your pancreas (which is also an amazing movie).

The plotisn't too surprising if you've seen this type of movie before, protagonist is fucking depressed, meets girl, guy and girl improves their life thanks to their relationship, it's more complex than that of course but htat's the idea, in this case, the girl she ends up liking was a girl she used to bully because she was mute, and what used to be their classmates resent him for it

Our protagonist is completely and fully aware that they resent him, and just doesn't want top interact with anyone for that reason, even if they dont know them, they're still too scared to talk, the way this is showcased in the movie is by crossing out the faces of everyone else

and while they dont explicitely tell you what the crossed faces mean, or that he sees everyone under that same light, the spectator understands this perfectly, you learn about the situation and then you can extrapolate all that information, allowing for a lot more character development with only a few extra seconds of runtime

in that sense it reminds me of Ping Pong, they dont tell you how the protagonist got into ping pong, but by reading it, you just know. I love this style of storytelling

not only that, but this way of telling the story not onl makes you enjoy the plot more, because if they just told you all that stuff from the stuff, you would enjoy it a lot less than just discovering and understanding it yourself, and being proud of yourself for doing so

it's also a lot more ambiguous than a written sentence, so it really does help to illustrate this very ambiguous and complex feelings

and while the movie advances, he gains confidence and forgives himself for their past acts, he starts losing the crossed out faces, being more open, and finally being able to really push their life forward

our female MC also has a lot of developement too, mainly, the misscomunication that constantly happens during the movie, of having her friends who stil resent the guy try to constantly read her mind and talk for her, even if she didn't feel that way at all

however, she has lived her entire life like that, she's kinda used to it already, and again, by seeing the movie you understand this fact, even if no one had to explicitily tell you

I absolutely love this movie, it has a lot to say about disabilty and depression, and it does it in this beautifully artistic way that is honestly needed to be able to portray these types of complex feeling. It's just wonderful. I giving it a 10 in myanimelist

yes, still open, will still be open for a long while
Alright here, just do it in any order:

Kagurabacchi (genuinely curious of your opinion) [4 chapter]

Shimotsuki-san wa Mob ga Suki (ongoing one-shot i think) [8 chapter]

Reincarnation no Kaben (one of my personal favourite for some reason, ongoing) [69 chapter]

Billy Bat (i haven't finished it myself, but it's pretty confusing, you don't have to do this one if you don't want to, it is pretty long) [165 chapter]
You know, I regret posting here. The thing I asked for will probably never get done.

i've already read kagurabachi

since then more chapters were released, they're currently on chapter 3 with the 4th one leaked, i've read them and idk, it's alright, there is nothing I can really point out that say it's good, and I don't know if I like the direction, like, they didn't even make the protagonist good, he's just strong because their katana is strong, and so far there is nothing of character development or plot and just fights, just not my jam

rest haven't read, billy bat was on my p2r list tho, I really enjoyed 20th century boys, in fact, it's one of my favourite mangas

thanks for reading

ok but actually, I just dont get this mangaka, i've read four mangas of them (Oyasumi punpun, dead dead demons dedededestruction, subarashii sekai and now this one), and I have to say, I hated all four of those

asano inio has this writting style where the plot is just pure unfiltered nihilism, and I feel you're only really going to enjoy their mangas if you already agree with that philosopohical viewpoint, because he doesn't really put any effort into actually making you care if not

for example, this manga, which is one volume long, the protagonist starts being a complete asshole for not good reason, and I feel the manga expects me to still care about this character and t osee their cool little growth, but due to the fact that I hate about the character from the fourth , I just dont care, i'm just wishing for divine retribution and for the character to be punished for their actions, something that doesn't really happen in this manga, but, insteaad, their actions are weirdly rewarded

I feel that is by far my biggest problem with this mangaka, that is the reason why I also disliked punpun, I just didn't care about punpun at all, the story was made to be so nihilistic that I just couldn't even care about the manga itself

another quirk of their writting, is in fact, that it's just bordering on torture porn, like actually, we did NOT need a rape scene in punpun, and the end of this manga just borders in the same imaginery, even if that was just an hallucination

the story is not particulary deep or interesting either. It's not bringing anything new to the table and it's not really a noteworthy story, which was mainly my problem with subarashii sekai, while it does look like it would be deep, it really isn't

however, I have to say, most of these problems were adressed in dead dead demons dedededestruction

... at least the first half of it

because yeah, it starts strong. It's a story of an alien invation from the perspective of someone normal and society at large, not a story focusing on the heroes that would save the world or anything, which is a story I like. The characters are actually likeable, and the nihilistic point of view actually makes the manga better

but starting the second half, I feel that vision of an alien invasion from the eyes of someone normal is lost, as the story gets more complicated for some reason, culminating on the worst ending i've ever seen to a manga

I just dont get this mangaka, and honestly this is probably the weakest manga from all of the ones i've read from him, I'm actually interesting in hearing any positive opinion on this because I don't get what there is to like here

watched the first chapter, this is just a funny silly youtube series about a game show, no real topic or anything I can really analyze since it's not particulary deep or original, there isn't even really a script set ahead of time since it's comment vote out people

edit: also, just to clarify, there are youtube videos that are worth analyzing that can in fact be as deep as a regular movie, just not animated game shows, or game shows in general. I'm not just saying my opinion and saying if you sohuld watch something or not, i'm trying to look at the themes, at the elements in a certain piece of media and why I enjoy them or why I dont, or what do I think the author was trying to do and how well did they achieve it. Or even with the train stuff that was submited earlier, look at actual real life events and stuff and the consequences they had in the world. you can read my previous stuff and see all of that

hobbit analysis:

this is a prequel to the lord of the rings, I think everyone knows that far, it's supposed to be lower stakes than LOTR, so it's not like everyone is going to die or anything, in fact, the start of the films seems to set us up for a more slice of life-ish adventure, of how this random guy got drafted in, and changed as a person due to the adventure that followed

the hobbit is by all means a pretty good trilogy, same for LOTR, but honestly it's weighted down by the fact that they were so succesfull that every fantasy story from there on will take inspiration from tolkien

that's really my only complain raelly, it's just, the standard of medieval fantasy with blacksmithing dwarves, elf archers and big fire breathing dragons is just too common for it to really be mind-blowing, and while I do know that this existed WAY before LOTR, I feel that the success of those movies pushed the genre to be even bigger

the hobbit is also not really something to enjoy standalone, it's something for if you do like LOTR to know more about the characters and middle earth, it's still a pretty good fantasy story, but you're not really going to miss out on much if you didn't really like LOTR beforehand

however, it's true that the movies are incredibly high quality, the actors are good, the cinematography is good, there really isn't anything bad about it, it's just so successful that you're not really going to be surprised or amazed at anything it you watch it in the current year

nothing more I have to say about it really

Finished texhnolyze: I have a lot to say about this anime, and half of it isn't even about the anime

this is a weird AF anime, it's an extremely slow anime, with confusing storytelling and almost no sound, and I mean that there are like moments in the anime that's basically just a black screen with no sound for like 5 seconds.

To be fair, in the second half of the anime, they start adding more dialogue, since they start focusing mroe on the plot but yeah, if you dont enjoy the first chapters you're not enjoying the end even with that slight change on style.

with this type of anime I think everyone has their own interpretation, so i'm going to explain my entire thought process of why I think the way I do about texhnolyze

first of all, we got to see why the decision to barely have any dialogue or even images at point really do for the anime, to be fair, if you wanted to write a story about the afterlife and not really being quite human that sort of stuff you would just write something like haibane renmei, but this is drastically different to that.

Silence is not a good option for telling a plot, since when you're talking about complex concepts, like texhnolyzation or any other very specific and precise details, you must use words, you cant really explain world history properly without really using a single word.

the one thing that's actually better understood without saying a word are personalities, how someone acts. It's better to actually see that person in action than just hearing about it. If you realize that the anime is extremely silent (which you will), you're going to start focusing more on every detail that you have access too, and that includes how a character acts.

this anime is all about that, seeing how people reject and embrace the post-humanistic ideas, how they deal with being able to see a possible future or how they deal confronted with death, if you look at the anime with that lens, and stop really trying to fully understand the plot I think you will see it a lot more clearly

this is reinforced by the fact that it is an anime original, there was no source material for this. When creating an anime original you take full advantage of the medium, a lot of the time betters than a adaptation from a manga, and allowing to determine how long each shot lasts does improve the experience of this anime.

the actual anime is pretty interesting, I think all the characters are very interesting and the locations and plot really reinforce and create situations where they flourish a lot.

----- (starting this part I start derailing to something entirely else so yeah, my actual analysis of the anime itself ends here) ---

However, I suspected one thing. This wasn't about the anime itself, I've already said all that I wanted to say about the anime, but more about the reception and seeing why other people enjoyed or disliked this anime

and that is, because I know how the internet acts, and I know that my opinion on this anime would be in the minority

Currently, on the internet, every disscussion on any film, anime, book, manga, or even colaborative project will end up in the same way. The internet wants to see an explanation for EVERYTHING, the work doesn't even have to be abstract for this to really happen. I saw it happen with lain, and I feared it happening the same with this anime

I feel the biggest current example of this are in fact, the backrooms. One guy did a short horror story, and then people started to go, but wait... where does x come from? where do you from here? eternally, and you now currently have something closer to S than you did to the original work

A similar thing happened with lain, it had a lot of elements that also mainly work to make it a more character focused story, however, look into any disscusion of lain, and everyone is praising how complex the plot is, even if lain really doesn't have that much plot (and honestly isn't really that good IMO)

and you here had a similar recipe, abstract anime that mainly focused on the characters with barely any dialoge. So I looked into it, and I was right.

Most of the negative reviews i've seen on this anime is that the anime was too slow "for no reason at all" and that you could not understand the plot properly, and i've also seen some other analysis trying to completely decypher and explain the plot. To be fair I did find a lot of people talking similar stuff to me. But I realy think that just going with that mentality is going to cause you to enjoy some works a whole lot less, and I think this is one of those examples

so yeah, good anime, but to embrace the abstract and confusing aspects of it rather than trying to overexplaining it to really enjoy it (at least in my personal opinion)

----

and you here had a similar recipe, abstract anime that mainly focused on the characters with barely any dialoge.

Glad you liked it, it's a hit or miss
I seeing the first episode and the only dialogue comes after like 15 mintues and is a guy on the phone but you only hear what he says, no idea who he's talking to or even what they're talking about

People don't like anime etc. that require them to think, but they still watch stuff like that then complain (average MAL reviewer lol)

Gilgamesh is another anime with a similar weird vibe but not nearly as abstract

When creating an anime original you take full advantage of the medium, a lot of the time betters than a adaptation from a manga, and allowing to determine how long each shot lasts does improve the experience of this anime.

the actual anime is pretty interesting, I think all the characters are very interesting and the locations and plot really reinforce and create situations where they flourish a lot.

yeah stuff that long is going to make me not actually take other requests for a long time, so i'm prioritizing other stuff first, as I said earlier, I may still do it eventually, so no harm in suggesting

another one : What about Made in Abyss?
I'm very biased in favour of made in abyss, since it was the first anime I read that I went "I get it" and decided to watch more anime in my own spare time after that, as that was a friends recommendation. In a way, this is the anime that got me into anime

made in abyss is an incredibly good anime which only problem being the fetishes the author has. The concept of the abyss is brilliant, originally being 6 locations, with a 7th theorized one, with it's own aesthetic, rules, flora and fauna, and other weird stuff

there is also the catch that the lower you delve into the abyss, the harder it is to go back up, going lower than the sixth means instant death. This translates into the first few layers being fairly well studied but then being more and more mistery the lower you go.

The anime does start seeming like it's a SoL adventure thing, only going down to the abyss after a fairly long overground segment, which seems to set the tone of the anime, however, while the first layers are fairly cool, the lower they go, the more fucked up the anime gets

so, the abyss structure is giving us a clear picture of what the author wants us to think of made in abyss when you start watching it, but purposely goes scaling up the things slowly, giving space for character developement in the way of the relationship between them and also their survival skills in the abyss. This also sets up a lot of mistery that will be relevant until the end of the anime since chapter 1

the abyss itself is also something that works best in this medium, as if this was just a regular film, doing these sorts of complex environment would be EXTREMELY difficult if not. The artistic decision is also great, using great colors all around, and the decision of having less light in the bottoms of the abyss leads to the lower environment seeming more hostile, fitting the theme of the anime

I feel made in abyss is one of the animes with the best world-building really. Nothing about the world seems cheap or just like a plot device, everything from the zones, the specific creatures, the relics, has multiple purpouses each for the plot, and their simple existance just teases up things from very very early on

for the actual characters, I have less to say, they're just very well written characters all-around, they allow for the story to be funny, to be sad, to have moments of fear, etc, and while I cant really say anything excepcional about them, I cant really ask for a more fitting character

(next sections are just full spoilers)

now, the flow of the anime itself is just wonderful, first, they show all the characters and make you have an emotional connection to them, they show nanachi at the same time as mitty, giving nanachi a lot of character developement really quickly, and allowing it to be a favourite character of many from the first arc with them, even if they had a lot of less screentime all around

not only that, but with mitty you're setting up bondrewd, what regs beam is capable of, and the concept of the soul. With bondrewd they expand on the soul and really make you care about it with prushka, and also sets up a lot of thing about white whistles

with the concept of value of the 6th layer you're using it all, mitty even makes an appearance back again to really showcase all of this, and I just love the concept of value. It allows to show the inner thinking of each character in such a detailed way. Each plot point in made in abyss is: setting up stuff for the future, using set up from a while ago, being emotionally impactful, and leading to more character developement in a way that feels natural, it's just nearly flawless

really, the only problem is that they show a lot of child characters in some weird scenes and poses, which can be pretty uncomfortable at times

the OST is also superb, as it s the atmosphere it's trying to achieve, and the songs itself are also beautiful

so yeah, made in abyss has an amazing plot, amazing characters, amazing world-building and music that takes advantage of the medium, it has it all.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

i've also finished reading billy bat, and i've got to say, i'm analyzing two masterpieces in this one post, as billy bat was an unexpected 10/10 from me

I really like naoki urasawa, I hav read monster, pluto, and 20th/21st century boys, being this later one of my favourite mangas of all time, so yeah, I went into this with high expectations, and holy fuck it did deliver

Billy bat feels in a lot of way very similar to 20th century boys and for good reason, it shares the setting, some of the locations, the symbolism that was used to push the story forward, the story structure with all of the constant time skips and flash backs, and it takes all of these elements for making a story that feels entirely different

billy bat, just like 20th century boys is a VERY dense manga, there isn't a single filler line of dialogue in the entire manga, and near the end, I feel you run out of breath as it ramps up to have plot twist after plot twist after plot twist

the plot follows this american comic writter, who works in "marble" comics, (not particullary subtle), and is doing a comic about a bat that solves crimes and saves the day, the comic is a success, but someone tells him that he had seen a similar character in japan before, and that it was probable that they also saw it and subconciously stole it

so they try to go to japan, and then shit happens, like, a lot of shit, the main point is that he can see the character billy bat going out of the pages and instructing them, giving them also inspiration to keep drawing, it's also worth mentioning that these comic chapters predicts the future

at the start of a lot of manga chapters you can see a few pages of the actual billy bat comic that it was drawn in the story, having a totally different art-style and more commonly than not, having color

these little bits of the comic are vital to understand the manga, as it has many, many characters and doesn't really focuses on a single one without any interruption, however, the global narrative aids you to understasnding how a character feels torward an event, what a logical response may be, what that characters means for the plot, and other sort of things

there are many side characters that only really appear once or twice, and for those characters the manga does something very smart. Almost every one-off character is based on a real world person, that way they can afford to introduce a character with so little screen time that the audience totally gets. If the manga shows you, I don't know, jesus christ, you know who that character is, allowing the story to keep the flow and without having to really explain many things

to be fair, I don't think I can really explain a lot of the plot itself and take much out of it, and that is because it's just SO FUCKING COMPLEX, really, I had almost never seen a story so complicated in structure while still being pretty understandable, with shows like texhnolyze there are few main elements that you can go "yeah that is uncommon but I can see what the author is trying to pull". However, with billy bat, there are 45 of those elements it honestly just sures the skills I have to really communicate properly in this type of thing

urasawa naoki is just one of the most skilled mangaka/director/writter person i've seen, as doing something of this magnitude just seems unreal

for example, let's take the ending, which is one of the parts that blew me away the most

you know pulp fiction right?, how at the start of the movie they show an event that will happen on the end of the movie, allowing for the audience to understand the characters and also set one thing in the future, in fact, the whole movie is based around tha tidea of achronological story-telling

billy bat had a similar idea, but they took it to the next level

the first scene does happen again in the end, however, the way it's done is totally different, as it is less giving you new information (how the heist for pulp fiction ended), but more like giving you slightly more context for the situation, nothing after the scenes of the start of the manga, but before. The end is not giving you any new information, but giving you more ground for the start of it

however, that extra concept, and the way it almost loops somehow works, as you can now see that start with all the information you've learned across the manga, and you realize, the end of the manga, was already showcased at the start, you just didn't understand it the first time

that is such an INSANE concept, I love it

and the whole manga is full of moments like that, in order to properly go across everything I think it's worth noting I would have to make this post 7 times longer and I just dont think I can do that, you're just going to have to trust me on this one that it's good. I'm surprised that this manga went as undernoticed as it did outside japan, because yeah, this is just god tier

----

next: ...suprisingly the ot!book, no mangas left so time to read books, this is the shortest one of all the vn and books rn so it will be the one I do first

also, i'm sorry for just not being able to give the best analysis for billy bat, it unironically is just too complex and I would have to re-read and write a chapter by chapter analysis like I did with shimeji to really know what to say
Wait what if you rate each chapter from the OT! Book?

Like rate all of the chapters from worst to best...

Mine should land somewhere somewhere below the mid or something idk... =P

I'm thinking of do rating each chapter individually, or at least every from the same s individually, since the advice and criticism I can give to someone are not the same as I can give to another person, I still have to see how I will do it

Wait what if you rate each chapter from the OT! Book?

Like rate all of the chapters from worst to best...

well, I caught up with the OT!book and analyzed it

here are my chapter per chapter notes, however they're less in depth than what i'm going to write on here

honestly, this is an above average work for the skill level of writting that we're working with, like, i've read a lot of fanfics that are infinitely worse, and the number of fanfics/original stories of non very experienced writters that I prefeered over this one were small

however, there is one BIG problem that really kills a lot of scenes in the book, and that is the pacing

the thing with allowing everyone to create a character and and write a chapter is that for example at the start, there are 80 pages of pure character introduction, so it kinda gets boring after the 15th chapter introducing characters, also, when there is an actually good plot thread going on, having 2 chapters following a totally different thread kills the pacing of the first one. So things like the action scenes that you're trying to pull near the latest chapters falls a little bit flat. You can still write a good book with this setup, but I just dont think action/drama works

now, another problem that is less general to the actual story structure, is actually something that I already ranted about in my texhnolyze review

the general problem that happens when the internet tries to write anything, you end with too much lore

everything must be explained and showed to the reader, you must have a map, names for each location, story for each part, in depth lore for each character, etc.

When you're watching a movie or reading a book that is normally considered to be of very high quality, there really aren't segments where they just dump a shitload of lore in a flashback about the protagonist after the character was introduced for the first time, yet here it happens constantly. You spend like 30 chapters introducing lore for everything and setting shit up but most of the plot points that ends up happening doesn't take advantage of any of that, with one major exception, chapters 17, 28, and 29

you dont need to understand 100% of the world if you're only going to use 20% of it for the plot

the arika/robotic club plotline is actually really really good compared to the rest of the book, and is BY FAR the best part of the book. The concept of a character that just makes drone to explore and do experiments takes full advantage of everything set up, it takes advantage of the concept of the crumbling world, it actually ties well with the other club which was already set up before and allows for a chapter in the future where they actually do a partnership. The end of the chapters usually do set up things that ends up being on use, the writting style is solid. Due to it not being action it does not suffer from that problem I mentioned before

problem is, the best plotline in the book only has 3 chapters

the main arc of the book is this other side/fantasy monster/action plot, which again, the action doesn't really work. The concept of the other side was cool, this distorted land with all the colors reversed and stuff, that's cool, but you just dont take advantage of it. It's just shown and then not really used for anything

I don't really know where that main plot is going, even if it's the one that has had the most screen-time I don't know what the end goal for it would be, but honestly seeing how the structure and how everything is set up, I understnad the book is going to go as far as it can until the thread dies, which doesn't seem to be soon

more weird and specific details are on the documment I shared

i'm also using this post as my pitch for becoming an editor for the book. I think a lot of the earlier stuff cant really be fixed without rewritting, something that I know isn't really going to happen, but I think you can still take this to a good direction if the book goes for long enough

------ updates -------

started revolutionary girl utena, watched first 4 chapters, I like it, I was almost all day outside yesterday so I didn't really watch anything yesterday

next on the list: hapymaher, kayou seemed like a bit sad that it fell so long, so i'm going to prioritize this one
