It certainly has improved, but what kind of filesizes are you getting for a ~3 min 720p30 file that is perceptually lossless?

From 75mb to 300mb, but once i have finished ing via Window Movie Maker, i open the 'temp' folder and delete the file so that it doesn't take up space on my hard drive
Everything is wroung with mine!! The sonds off with the vid its too slow when is rec. I cant play right and Stops and starts rec. out of nowhere! :o
I can recommend VHScrCap (VH Screen Capture Driver) or Xsplit Broadcaster.

I do know xsplit is being used primarily for livestreaming, but it also has the feature "Local Recording"

Highly reommendable!
Thanks for the guide!

Aproxx 3 minute map:
Fraps: 2.2GB

I changed osu! resolutions to 640x480 though, so the video quality isnt the best, but enough for me ;)
..now If only my speed was faster than 0.3kbps

If thats the 640x480 video, its still pretty big.

I'm getting like 50-80Mb with 720p videos :V

I used "template" = DVD NTSC instead of HDV 720-30p
It probably so big because its DVD?

IppE
Well MPEG2 is generally grossly inefficient compared to MPEG4 encoding. And that DVD template probably gives it the max bitrate specified in DVD spec, thus unnecessarily bloating it.

If you feel adventurous you can always read up on x264 and figure out how it works (Avisynth + x264 is pretty simple once you get the hang of it) or you can read Jeffro's quide on how to use x264vfw with Virtualdub as it uses a simple gui instead of a command line app.

I'll try MPEG4 with 720-30p next time then :)
- Thanks!
I'll have a look at the guide next time I record, the lower I can get the file the better. I think it took about 40minutes - 1 hours to this vid to youtube <_<

any Dxtory here?

with Handbrake (x264 of course), 40 MB, 3 minutes, at 720p
this is how i make my
HDV 1080-60i (1440x1080; 29,970 fps)

then i render it as Windows Media Video V 11 (.wmv)
8 MBps HD 1080-30p Video

A video that is 5 mins will only be 300 MB and its still full HD (1080p) with really good quallity :)

Why use x264 with some flimsy GUI when x264 accepts Fraps video as input as is?

you need to the codec first, or just K-Lite codec pack

i once use x264 directly on Dxtory, no Output whatsoever, so i use Xvid on Dxtory and encode it to MP4 with x264 on Handbrake

i'm not a command prompt , GUI makes thing easier
You need x264fw for that.

Also, scripting is fun when you get used to it. As a matter fact, I only need to run a batch file without having to tinker with anything for encoding using x264.

suit yourself, at least both ways produce an Output that we want, this place is not for arguing which way are the best.
When recording my fraps will pause for 5 seconds every 1 minutes and 50 seconds or so Dx

What kind of hard drive are you writing to? Sounds like there is some lag when it creates a new file.
i know fraps can only make videos of 4GB or something, maybe that has something to do with it.
500GB HD SEAGATE
made in korea maybe thats the problem? XDDD JKJK
I fixed it! I changed saving destinations ;) THANKYOU IppE!!!!!

i think use xsplite is much better :o, first fraps lags / second fraps takes loads space of your hardrive, third converting file format from sony vegas takes time, xsplite live record and utube is much faster o_o also xsplite s camera which can allow u to show hands XD

But recording high quality (as in lossless to the human eye) with xsplit while retaining filesizes is pretty much impossible due to its realtime nature.
That and if you have a decent computer (which you should if you are to record gameplay of anything), fraps does not lag nor is hard drive space an issue (I have ~120GB of virtually useless stuff on my fraps folder that I just haven't bothered to delete).

Oh and about Sony Vegas, don't bother pirating "professional" video editing software for the sole purpose of compressing video, Vegas is not the best tool for it. Use x264 or one of its many GUI frontends such as RipBot264, HDConvertToX or Simple x264 Launcher.

I'd personally only use xsplit for streaming (which it is aimed for and is virtually perfect at).
Ippe, don't bother.

You know I enjoy babbling about these things, even when the person I'm talking to has no idea what I'm saying.

thanks remco, capturing the video was easy enough on my own,but the rendering part helped me a lot even though i use a new version
could never have figured it out myself especially with the templates XD
sony vegas is awesome :3
use Fraps

Thank you, this is useful information.
For those of you who don't want to pay for Fraps, try this http://osu-ppy-sh.jeuxcrack.net/forum/t/84536

Useful.
I don't know why but my frap will only capture 29 seconds and then stop capturing....any ideas why?
IppE
Do you have the full version or trial?
Buy torrent the full version and you will be able to record longer than 30seconds.
ahhh ok thanks guys :)
You can also use Xsplit to do a local recording. It is easy on the hard drive space as well, and records in youtube friendly mp4 format.
IppE
But you're sacrificing quality or not getting the best compression possible since with xsplit you encode it in realtime due to the program being meant for streaming.
While it's true, it's much easier on your system. Some people can't fraps @30 fps believe it or not. :/
This works well if you want small file sizes to work with. http://www.zdsoft.com/screen-recorder/

It also take 10 seconds and a google search to crack :S

Those people should invest in a decent hard drive.

Or alternatively stop using laptops to record gameplay videos.

But that's what I use :(
I'm done with recording,but it's lagging.Why that happened? :(

This thread is really useful and I'd rather use BBFlashBack Pro 3 Recorder than use Fraps.
Hey guys, I have an issue, Sony Vegas isn't taking the sound of the video recorded with Fraps :?
my problem is that it suddenly stops recording I see the numbers go from Red to Yellow again without me stopping the recording.

Is it suppose to stop that way? I can't even record a full song in 1 video.

If you're using the free version of Fraps, it'll only allow you to record videos up to 30sec.
There's a built in recorder in MSI Afterburner that records pretty well on low-end computers.
People might want to take a look at it.
very nice tutorial. If I'm got better skils . I'm started videos
I want to add that you can use OBS to record your footage and it's free.
OBS is a nice free recording/streaming software. here's a link for you all. http://obsproject.com/
i cant get fraps to record osu without lag -_- anyone know a fix? and yes my pc should t not have any problems recording this

How fast is your hard drive?
Thank you ^-^
This was really helpful.
To those who use OBS: does anyone know why my sony vegas crashes every time I open the MP4 file that I made using OBS? It didn't crash when I used fraps :/
Thanks!
Do fraps windows 8? :(

Thought I prefer to use Lagarith Codec and record with Dxtory instead of using FRAPS.
This method sure is usefull but if i right i read a post like 1 year ago about a tool converting replays to videos or something.
I mean fraps does cost money so.

Uncle Fluff would like to have a word with you.

I wonder, would it be okay if I did some updating on this and made a wiki page of that too.
I have no idea why this thread is still stickied. Go visit the wiki people!
Alternatives to expensive Sony Vegas?
actually i record my movie with OBS

i've followed the tutorial for livestreaming osu! and set "File output only" instead of "live stream"

It's free, and intuitive

My file weight is like 80 Mb / 1 min
(when recording in 1080p, you should set "Max Bitrate (kb/s)" to 8 000 or more to keep a good quality)

Sorry for my bad english ><
yo dude action! doesn't detect osu as a game for some reason

you should just use obs to make simple recordings of osu!
this thread is super old, so old that the wiki article that it has linked no longer exists
