It is very clear what the votes where based upon and it is clearly not the quality of the map itself, nor the interaction with the storyboard.

I am disappointed, the result are very different of what I voted for:(
Freedom dive, mythologia, big black, scarlet rose ... I don't even have a chance of getting high in the chart

FREEDOM DiVE gets the second place. Mostly because it's a hell map? (Considering Scarlet Rose and Mythologia's End are tying for third, this makes sense.)

So most votes fall to popular songs and/or hell maps. A good look at osu!'s demographics.

Congrats for the mapper of Gangnam Style for seizing the opportunity of, well, making the Gangnam Style beatmap so it can win Best of 2012.

The votes were clearly made for the remarkability of the map, and not the song. If it were the song, we wouldn't have maps like Big Black or Freedom Dive, which redefined the standards for extremely tough maps in 2012.

Nevertheless, rainbow dash in #60 was actually very surprising.

simply change the title to "Best song of 2012"

Can't agree it. Top 100 of 2012 is still dominated by Touhou, anime op/ed and Vocaloid. However there are still additional cases so we saw FD, big black, dragons and so forth on the list

so the order people vote is basically:

1. songs' popularity
2. date of maps being ranked (Dec→Jan)
3. map's difficulty (Extra→Insane)
4. who's the mapper
5. maps' quality

but all of those don't matter. This is what more important ↓

Because the best maps are maps you can't even play... and gangnam style

best solution: remove gangnam style and all val/nakagawa/bd maps and re-do it.

Yep, this pins it down perfectly. People forget about maps which are older than 2-3 months unless they were blasted away by the map or the song is particularly good for them. One just doesn't have a good overview about every single map they've played. even when I voted I forgot a few maps which are actually amazing, yet failed to them (coz I got bad memory mb ? ._.).
Can't change anything about it though, congrats to yeahyeahyeahhh & may the song not influence the votes as much in '13

Sigh...totally expected this. Like the majority of popular polls,the most popular songs/maps win instead of the other ones. This happened on many polls,and well,I'm not surprised on seeing these results.

i guess this would happen when it was decided that the app maps also count, but i never thought it would be so dominating. i cant say it is better or worse than the past ones, just a little curious that if voters really chose the maps they really consider as "best"

dear andrea, you know it's not easy for every mapper to rank a map. this game has an incredibly rigid ranking system, which is not quite enjoyable to get that shit done.

we love this game and we respect all the mappers who work hard to create the awesome maps that make this game funny enough to play with. you'd better not to tell people they care too much because you don't care, andrea can get a map ranked within 48hrs, but normally, they CAN NOT

Don't be so serious, that's a game and we play it for fun. Everyone has his own best in mind.

Well, it might be unfair towards newer of the community (better call them playerbase) but I think one shouldn't be allowed to vote unless one has decent experience about maps (that means a specific playcount).

Edit: or maybe give more experienced more weigth on their votes.
