Awesome tips and songs! thx :)

thank you :)
:? :? :? :? :? :?
Thanks so much for the begining beatmaps :)
i love it <3
This list is great. I just got back to those maps and I must say, the list it's quite linear although it does misses some maps for a more linear progresion, expecially the easier ones.

If anybody asks about help with osu! I'll make sure they get here. Thank you!

Hope you or someone else will uodate this. :) I'll try to hunt down some nice maps to suggest.

And just so you know, bloody tears is a fitting name for your map T_T I still rage when I play it.
Great idea O: Although this post was from 3 years ago.. o-o Many people still use it O:
Nicely done. :3 Great way to help the newbies out.
This thread is a lie.
You're supposed to play chipscape 10 times a day until your hands break off, then you can call yourself pro.
Good guide for beginners,I am not really a beginner anymore (Okay,I am a bit lousy but not that bad) but still thank you. 8-)

Really nice guide.
I'm currently playing a bit of Osu! too, but no succes yet :(
Maybe CTB is the only thing I'm good at :P
Thanks for the tips, and the songs too :)

Thank you for this!
This is a good beatmpa selection for beginners :D
Yay! Songs for beginners! I really need this.
IT helps a lot in me!! :) in normal mode I got SS already in 1day play :)
Beatmap packs apparently don't exist on mediafire anymore. :( Can you please fix this???
Working my way through these. Thank you for this post! :D
I guess I should try getting used to osu from this guide....
Silly me, what did I play for my first time... :P
좋은 정보 감사드립니다^^ :)
Good information, thank you ^ ^ :)

BY.KorManiaChobo ;)
Yeah, I was cocky and so I was humiliated. Osu isn't THAT easy...for me anyway. thank you very much! I shall now 'train' with these songs~
Can somebody please unsticky this thread

It has maps from 2008 that are godawful (no offense to the mappers ;_; you know it to be true... most of them don't even have correct bpm) and gives beginners the wrong idea. A simple guide telling people "disable mouse acceleration, make sure your frame limiter is set to unlimited, and play the latest maps you see under Beatmaps > Ranked" would be 100x more effective than this misleading thread.
Ahh... this is nostalgic. I ing the beatmap packs from this thread 2 years ago and just grinding them until I could SS the songs that I liked. It gave me a really good image of this game, because the maps were of perfect difficulty to a total beginner.

Without this thread I would've just gotten scared of the high difficulty of new maps and would have quit in a few hours.
just practie more more practice :)

Aqo wrote: 382f42

I cannot play without vsync, and if that happens to me, it can happen to someone else.

If anything, we should recreate this with a list of recent maps.
yay ty :)
Hello! I'm new here. ed osu! because of my sister's suggestion. I'm no good at rhythm games so this guide help me so much. Thank you!
And I'm still failing at the first Orange Range song xD
Pretty good help, I use these maps for my aptop though xD
Thanks, "This is sparta!" it's amazing haha :)
I had forgotten about this thread... oh man those first few days after finding osu! were amazing. brb playing that ancient orange range map
Flashlight.. it's really Hard huh ? especially if we also use DT -_-
Woah... Thanks this will is going to help me a lot! I am such a newby at this
Please update the OP I made a list of maps that is good for beginner training:

Forgotten
Freedom Dive
Sacrifice
Big Black
Eighto (totally not biased)

Play those and you'll be good at everything! Streaming fast, streaming long, stacking patterns, sliderjumps, circlejumps, everything :D

And it's also easier than the maps in the original op so it's more beginner-friendly!
http://osu-ppy-sh.jeuxcrack.net/b/13114&m=0 1000bpm what the *
And THIS is how I started Osu! :)
Thanks for the training maps, going to try them out.
Im suprised people still use this.... Really...
This selection helped me and my friends to become an OSu player and not a player clicking the screen hoping to hit notes :) Thanks for your help man
Me, I did things a bit differently since I don't own copies of the songs used in the tutorial thing here(and I'm ridiculously rule/law/proper-conduct abiding)...I basically just searched for some random DDR songs in games I have and some Touhou stuff, and played the Easy maps for my start. Now, a bit under a week later, I can handle some maps between 3.5-4.5 stars, so I guess another good way to do things is to pick songs you already know that you like, if you find a .osz for it, so that you already have the rhythm down so it'll be easier to understand how the notes are supposed to flow together or something.
Can somebody please delete this thread
It does more to misguide beginners looking at the forum than help them
she_old
beginners should start off with insanes and DT >:
Regardless of map difficulty, beginners should start with maps that are timed well and follow the song and not maps that have incorrect tempo and an offset more than 20ms off, which is the case with nearly every single old map that makes up the OP of this thread.

Those maps shouldn't even be ranked anymore. Or at least majorly fixed from the ground up. Osu needs a serious re-ranking purge to be done once every year or so.

I know a person who has been playing from 2009 and could barely [Hard]s up until two weeks ago, then I told him to play on 2012 maps instead of the stuff he played until now (which was mostly 2009/2010 maps, I specced him and asked him what he plays, etc). Now he is already able to play Insanes with little to no problem and is already trying out HardRock and Hidden on them.
I started with Touhou - Bad Apple, It follows the song well

Still, I sortof regret the choice, I can't even get halfway through the song without failing.
Havn't tried this guide but once I get home I'm hopping on it xD :D
TY SO MUCH :D These songs are really fun and after 2 hours of play (lol XD) I can see my skill increasing! I'm halfway through the first list :3
>_<
Thanks for the maps

This.
As a complete beginner...
I just skipped to the end ones just to see if they'd be any challenge, and i was pretty right and assuming they weren't.

"Academy" is wrongly used here. Sure, they might be fun to play for beginners. However, if you want to get better, IMHO, play really hard songs, or at least ones out of your reach. I always play insane charts even though i just started...and my accuracy has improved over 10% in the week or two i've been playing(no, i don't play 24\7.)

If someone played insane charts for 100 hours versus someone playing easy-med charts for 100 hours starting out, who do you think would be better at playing higher difficulty charts?

The beginner couldn't even begin to sightread(which is my main problem in playing if i can add - i can stream\follow just fine, i can't read the charts well yet though(Meh, my eyes are terrible to go with this too though sadface. Could probably consider me nearly blind in the only one i can use...))

The begginer might have improved a bit, but he wouldn't be able to play at the higher speeds either. Assuming the expert player practiced intelligently, he should be more skillful than the beginner, although it's only 100 hours time.

That's my take on it at least. At least start on hard+ charts(bad apple was a nice starter for me, cirno's perfect math class is hell but was my first map. playing something that's almost out of your reach isn't something i've really tested much yet - may later on...) and you'll be better than sticking with what you're good at.

EDIT: also the miku - this is sparta map is pretty badly timed...and i hear the others are as well...that's just misleading the beginners even more....shouldn't even be ranked.

SECOND EDIT: Oh yeah, one more thing. Get used to playing AR10, good way to increase your accuracy on your hardest maps in an hour lol..(for me at least xD)
she_old
The reason to not spam stuff that's way too hard for you at the start is because you'll get bad habits like spamming your keys to hit jumps, or to purely play on reaction and not sense of rhythm.
Though if you're having fun like that then you should keep on doing so, having fun is the point of the game after all.
Shuriken_old_1
Thanks for the beatmap tips. I seriously need Practice.
You know.. this thread is submitted at 2008... of course it listed old maps..
Well i think Osu is pretty easy u just need to play everyday and u will get better!
Try always to play harder beatmaps and there shouldnt be a problem :)
she_old
why is this still stickied
jesse's thread is clearly the better of the two
It's stickied because it's still a useful collection.

Don't be afraid of old songs, the majority of the osu achievements are maps from 2008/2009.
she_old
it's still outdated though, those maps look nothing like the later maps and aren't the way to train now
These are great maps for beginners. Training, though... hmm, I'm not too sure. This thread is kinda historic though, so I'm reluctant to unsticky it.
It's bad history and it should be hidden. FL'd, even.
t/99612 this was a pretty cool thread
Well then, I just discovered that team can't actually change sticky status in this forum anyway. That makes this decision easier, haha \:D/
she_old
would be great if this gets unstickied and jesse's thread gets stickied instead.

maybe some aqo training thread would be nice too
salut

Oh wow thanks a lot, I'm really surprised I missed this
Now I can help all mah franz
:D
Instead of removing the sticky how about we see some great ideas for a new training pack and get this thread up to date?
I came across a similar thread on the Chinese forum and it was a relatively old post too. The OP in that thread put a lot of effort into sorting the list systematically so that you can train from top of the list to the bottom in order. The skills you learned from previous song is often required to the next etc, I find that quite interesting.

The thread is, of course, written in Chinese. Feel free to browse it using Google Translate etc. I might translate it if there is enough interest (hell, that thread is LONG once you expand all the boxes)...

P.S. You might come across the term "Tentacles" by using oniline translate and you'll be scratching your head. Chinese speaking players nicknamed pros "Tentacles" for some reason (wish I know lol). :D
if only i knew this when i started it would go faster :)
played all songs but my skills are going backwards.

we could unsticky this, have someone else create a new "Beginner's Training" that is up to date and stuff. If the current OP gets updated, it won't really be Pokebis who made the thing anymore.

Similar to how I made a tutorial project t/3815

There have been many lists in this forum so far of beatmaps that will improve your skill, those could have their own topic called "Hard beatmaps" lists or something
t/116747
I just want to point out that there are many different ways to train and certain method may suit some but not others. If anyone is creating any sort of new training package, please name it "XXX's Training for <Target Level>" or something like that. Different training packages should be allowed to co-exist with one another.

Since there are already many threads in this forum that covers specific training component, I think it'll be a good idea to have a new and centralised stickied thread that keeps track of links to all training/improment threads. This way you can get away with having only 1 sticky instead of many (and save time from re-inventing the wheel). The tracking thread OP can then be organised into categories, much like t/99612, with the difference of providing links instead of actual advice in OP. Of course, there will be extra categories like "Beginner's Training" and more.

If this does happen, it'll be great to include links to "Health and Safety" related discussions too.

EDIT: LOL I just realised that the acronym "OH&S" can be applied to osu as well. Instead of reading "Occupational Health & Safety," it could be "OSU Health & Sanity" xD
There are just too many maps out there today so you can't really go recommend people stuff because their tastes may vary.
The best way will always be -> find a song you like -> if you like the map and is challenging for you, play it for a while.
Rest is just practice and time spent.
Hi!
I kinda started a while ago, but I can't the entire file of songs because Mediafire doesn't have them anymore.
Just asking, cause I think that's a problem.
Thanks!

You can still the individual songs from osu website though. Just search for song names.
Hi, don't really know where else to post this, but I bought a tablet today and it's working just fine. My biggest problems so far is holding the pen correctly and hovering over it correctly but I think I can get used to it.

My question is why do my key bindings not work correctly when I'm going through the starting screen and my maps? I can't use z as left click etc., I need to tap with the pen. How do I change this? In the actual game it works just fine.
The key binds are only for the in-game mode. Inside the menus they don't apply, and you should think of your tablet as a mouse there.
So I actually have to tap through all the menus?
You could try navigating through it by using mind control, but I hear it's somewhat unconventional.

Either tap or switch to your mouse in song select. You may also use your keyboard only if that's what you want.
You have to tap to make the left click.

If you find it too much work to navigate with stylus alone, try to utilise keyboard shortcuts and the scrolling pane (available on some models) of your tablet.

At the song selection menu, Left/Right arrows navigate through songs, while Up/Down arrows navigate through individual difficulties within a song.

Note: I'm just putting this together at the moment and it most definantly not where it will be eventually, I will add Tips by songs and more directions and such. You can still use the guide but it will not be perfect at the moment.

Have you just started osu! and ed a song you like to realize you're terrible at it? Plenty of people pour in with this problem so I'm offering a solution- A simple guide that direct you to songs that will help improve your skill level. In other words, Beginner's Training.
Basically I will show you good maps to learn from so you can progress into the magical world of osu!
I will put this together in steps each step doesn't need to be followed precisely, but is a general blueprint of how to get started and practicing.

In steps I will list maps in an order, by no means you actually have to play in order but this is what I suggest.

STEP ONE: The Beginning
Welcome to the osu! Hotel!! My name is Pokebis and I will serve as your guide! :)
If you're new to osu! and have no idea where to start Step 1 is certainly the right direction!
Here you will learn general beat hitting, hitting to rhythm, hitting to vocals, and some minor mouse control.
Welcome to the world of osu! :D
Your Rhythmical adventure begins here.

Also to look at the mode I'm suggesting, these are all easy maps.

1) ORANGE RANGE - Ikenai Taiyou [Beginner] --This is a really good welcome map to your wonderful osu! journey! Click the circles when the shrinking circles overlap; those are called beats. The circles that extend are called sliders; they do the same thing except a ball comes out; keep your mouse button held and move the cursor over the ball in till it reaches the end! When a large circle appears on the screen hold down the mouse button and spin the cursor in circles, this is called a spinner and if you are fast enough you may pick up some bonus points! Also when none of the things I mentioned earlier appear and a painted circle or X appears don't do anything, it's a break you can rest. This song is good to learn the basic skills, if you find it too easy you can skip to #4.
2) Silvertide - Devil's Daughter [Easy] --This map is good for practicing spinners.
3) Steel Angels - Kiss Kara Hajimaru Miracle [Easy] -- This map is a really good foreshadow of what's to come. Try to click to a repeating beat.
4) Catherine Warwick - Pollyanna (I Belive In You) [Easy] -- This is where the real fun begins. Try to find patterns within the song to help you follow them.
5) Neon Genesis Evangelion - Cruel Angel's Thesis [Rei (Easy)] -- Really listen to the music in this map as it goes along. This is where the beats are really relevant to the song and you need to listen to the song to know when to hit them. This map also introduces double beats which are beats on top of each other. You'll know when you see them.] Also watch out for 1-2-3 combo's that go back and forth, they can be tricky. Also the notes are smaller now, but still pretty large compared to harder maps.
6) Jonathan Coulton - Code Monkey [Easy] -- This map is a really great display of how to follow the tempo of a song.
7) Nights: Journey of Dreams - Dreams Dreams (Will Version) [Easy] -- This map teaches you how to follow vocals in a song. Try and tap when they say words.
8) KOTOKO - agony [Easy] -- This song has a lot of sliders that repeat. If you haven't learned by now, when there is a bent arrow on the end of the slider that means to keep holding onto the ball the other way.
9) BrainCells, SnappleMan - Scrambled Eggman [Beginner]Mini-Boss alert! -- This map may seem a little tough, but if you can beat it that means your making some progress! If you have trouble go back to some earlier maps and brush up (also you could try and improve scores while your at it!)
BOSS) Hyadain - CRASH!! (Let's do it) [Easy]Boss alert! -- Now it's time to put what you learned to the test. Apply what you learned earlier as this map has a lot of just that!
BONUS CHALLENGE) Initial D - Running in the 90's [Easy] -- Here is another nice beginner challenge map, try it whenever you feel.
Step Two: The beat begins
Refresher) Arashi - Love So Sweet [Easy] - Use this map as a nice refresher for what was covered in the last step. Pretty Easy. Note that the heart-shaped slider starts going to the left. An arrow will pop up to help you know which way to start on that slider.
1) All American Rejects - Swing Swing [Easy] - Now you may want to start taking into consideration beat spacing. Beat spacing usually is a very helpful way of knowing when to hit a beat. If beats are closer together, you should try to hit them within a shorter amount of time. If beats are far away. allow a longer amount of time to hit them. Also allow spacing to help you identify patterns that may occur in different ways. Also note the little circles that connect each beat. They always follow to the beat right after it, so use this to identify the order in which to hit the beats.

2) Alestorm - Nancy The Tavern Wench [Teatotaller]
3) Hatsune Miku - Miku Miku ni shite ageru [Easy]
4) The Wingless - All the World in One Girl [Easy]
5) The Black Mages - Battle Theme (Final Fantasy VI) [Easy]
6) Michiru Yamane/Masahiko Kimura - Bloody Tears [Easy]
7) Animal Crossing - DJ KK [Easy]
8) Hatsune Miku - THIS IS SPARTAAA!!! [Easy] Mini-Boss Alert!
9) TAITO - Snow Melt Into Water (JET de GO!) [Easy]
BOSS) Puffy Ami Yumi - K2G [Easy] Boss Alert!!
BONUS CHALLENGE) Jakazid - Cillit Bang (Hardcore Mix) [Easy]

General Tips
  • If you're ever having trouble figuring out how to hit some beats or how a combo is spaced look to the side of the screen on song select. There you will see scores that are either local or online. There is a button that looks either like a man or a chi-symbol at the top of the screen; it toggles local and online scores. Click on one of the scores to view the score page and click Watch Replay osu! will then begin replaying what that person did! Also when you finish a song, unless your computer has barely any space at all I recommend always saving your replay as they can deem useful to not only you, but others as well.
Also If you're ever having any problems, feel free to drop into chat (F8) and talk to us, we are a really nice community! (As long as you don't say something dumb)
Also Check the FAQ for more general answers.
Beatmap Packs
These packs are the maps in each step so you don't have to them seperatly. You'll need Winrar to open them, don't worry it's free. Just extract the .rar folder in your osu! songs folder and you should be ready to go!
